The difference between the 996 forum and the 997 forum here on RL is about like daylight and dark!

While there's been a few remarks and some messages about my posts here, its not been nearly as colorful as what happens on the 996 forum.

I agree. I think what people want is the information to help make solid decisions. I for one have been following this as I am trying to decide if I should drive my new-to-me 997 this winter if there is no snow around. So this thread has given me lots of info to consider.

I'm still not sure what people here hate about jakes advice/insight ? If you don't like it then move on. I can say that I proudly have one of jakes products and can't be happier with it. I for one definitely can't afford to loose my motor at any given moment. And thanks for the free advice, it seems that he's the only one giving this stuff away for free. You don't really see that anymore either!

I got bored did a search around and found some interesting posts here about a ticking sound prior to a motor blowing up. A lot of times it gets misdiagnosed as bad lifters it seems.

There is no doubt that my Porsche will now have it's own little space heater before it goes out in the cold. I thought of getting a horse, at least if blows a gasket I can eat it. No offense to horse lovers and they eat horse meat in France. Great article in The Wall Street Journal 9/6. Made me love my car again. I am going to sleep in it to night.

Like I've been saying for over a decade. To hear a "bad lifter" is to assume a"failed cylinder".. I have a car here now that a dealer spent 14K on a lifter job to repair, but the issue never was the lifters and the issue was the cylinders.

You should seriously train some of the Porsche dealerships about that. I had a slight ticking sound years ago and a dealership called Porsche of Arlington wanted to rip into my lifters and charge me $12,000! I refused. Not because I know anything, but because they had a 400 dollar charge on the major service bill for "re-aligning the back seat". I took the keys and ran.

Every time I read something like that it makes me wonder what the hell is going on in dealerships. I just came from my indy. He had the car all day. Did a once over on everything in the car and I mean everything. 2 page written report on everything he inspected. Changed the oil. Installed the Fister exhaust. Even cleaned out all my wheel wells for no reason other then he had the tires off and decided the wheel wells weren't as immaculate as the rest of the car. Total charge - Less then just an oil change at a dealer.

Jake, I was a long time board lurker before I became a member and I've read through some of the wealth of information you've had to offer, mostly on the 996 forum. You are obviously a highly passionate and intelligent individual. I appreciate it when you jump into threads like this and offer tangible evidence and reasonable advice based on your wealth of experience.

The one important thing to note for anyone reading these threads is the sky is not falling. These are simply the realities of high performance vehicles. Other car boards are full of engine failures as well. They happen to a relatively small percentage of vehicles. There will of course always be more threads with problems on any car forum then threads of people reporting that their car has run another 10k miles without issue. I kind of felt after Jake posted in this thread that there would be offshoot threads...and there have been. Jake is not here to promote mass hysteria. The sky is not falling. Simply a reality of owning any high performance vehicle.

Thanks for taking part in the discussion Jake. I for one value your input and experience. If my engine ever blows up, I'll be calling you.
