I ordered the fister exhaust mod and it should get here Thursday. I remember reading a link on here about a step by step install. I've been searching all morning and reading tons of posts but can't seem to find it. I hate to ask but does anyone have a DIY on the fister exhaust install? Thanks!

For 2006, aside from your request for step by step, there are mixed reports of whether the bumper needs to be removed. Some have swapped mufflers without removing the bumper (just increasing access via removing rear wheels/tires).

When doing without bumper removal, you need to get creative in how you hold wrenches and turn them in tight spots.

I did mine without removing the rear bumper, just the rear wheels. As Philster says the three nuts on each muffler are a little tricky to get to, but still doable.

 

I was able to do mine without removing the bumper or the wheel. It's very tight but doable. Here are the instructions Darin (Fister) wrote to me. This is really all I used. Probably easier to remove the tire but worked out find. Also sent a link for the diagram he references. btw I was able to do it using the much maligned ramps vs jack or lift. Good luck.

Jack up the rear of the car, or use a lift.
Remove the small bracket that connects the bumper to the frame, right behind the rear wheel.
Loosen 2 nuts at the cat connection(#29) (13mm socket) and slide the clamp towards the center of the car (about 2” is all.)
Reach up over your headers and remove the three nuts on the inside of the mounting bracket (#16) (13mm socket.)
They are in a triangle pattern and the bottom one is hard to see so you have to feel for it.
Once those three nuts are removed, gently push the muffler towards the fender and wiggle it out from the bottom. It is a tight squeeze but will come out.
Place it on the bench and move the bracket and bolts to the new muffler (#24 & 25)(13mm wrenches)
Remove the exhaust tip.
Reverse to install and put the tip on last.
Repeat for second side.

Go to the website: 6speedonline.com and do a search for GUNDO HACK. It will give you a step by step install complete with pictures. I used the stock mufflers and modified them according to the directions. Cost was $300 complete with weld shop cost and repair shop install and reinstall. Since you ordered the Fister mufflers, it is essentially "plug and play". Remove old mufflers and install the Fister mufflers. If you don't want to do it yourself, have your repair shop do it. Won't cost much at all....

 

Yoi need a special tool to get to some bolts. Thats it. Otherwise its a walk in the park

 

my bolts looked real rusty and I didn't have time so I chickened out and had my local indy to it. I pick it up later today and i'll post a sick vid of me revving for ya'll.

 

Can't wait to hear it. I ordered a set of fister mufflers for my 997.2. Had them on my 996. The quality of the welds is second to none. I didn't want to trust a local shop to "hack" my mufflers.

Bumping this back up as it seems the most relevant.

I'm debating whether to remove the rear bumper or not for this. Any thoughts? Seems like its 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other. Less space restriction with it off - less time leaving it on....

 

My local P dealer did mine and charged about $250 to swap out OEM with Fabspeed Maxflos. In my situation, it tied up their lift for another day because I needed to overnight from Fabspeed the sleeves/clamps that the seller forgot to include.

I know there is this zen thing about DIY but sometimes you end up biting off more than you can easily chew.

 

I swapped my mufflers with another 997.1. The workshop did the un&install on both cars without taking off the bumpers or wheels.
