Biggest difference is the power and "raw" nature of the 997. When you start it up, it just feels more like a crouching tiger. As you drive out of the parking lot, it feels like holding a really big dog like a mastiff back on a leash - it just wants to go, and it almost seems like the car is uncomfortable going slow. On the road - wow. Hit the gas and it's off. Faster, and seamlessly so, than I would have thought. Takes no effort to go from 85 km to 130 km to pass someone on the highway - feels virtually instant.
Second biggest difference is the ride/suspension - PASM is amazing, and everything that it was promised to be. The normal "comfort" mode is amazing! Sports mode is great, and switches virtually instantly. This, along with the other technical improvements (DFI and PTM) make it all worthwhile!
Third biggest difference is what I'd call the build quality and aesthetics. Again, I loved my 996 but always felt the interior was showing its age (from a design perspective). The 997.2 interior is the nicest car interior I've ever seen. Well organized and very functional, yet stylish. They got it right with this car.
Fourth - and I'll admit it - I'm happy to have round headlights finally!
