An interesting factoid I'd heard (not sure how accurate) was that 80% of Porsches sold are still on the road.
Being a porsche there's a much higher likelihood people won't dispose of these cars but that also has to point to some degree of reliability and longevity.
Personally if the car was 'right' and so was the price , I wouldn't shy away from it.

Let's just assume that these cars will run 200K miles with regular maintenance. A car with 50K miles is usually selling at around 50% if MSRP value. 1/4 of its life used up at 1/2 price.
Depreciation curve may flatten as the car age but maintenance cost will increase . I would not pay 30% of MSRP for a car with 50% of the car's life used up. That is not good value.
You will probably be the second to last person to own this car. Be prepared to sell it for no more than $15K if car has more than 150K miles in a few years.
Reasons are:
1. No attraction for track car build as a convertible.
2. Higher maintenance for a convertible bits.
3. Over supply of 997s in the market..
Let the car sell in open market. You will see the car sit asking low $30s.

So, you could possibly be at 25% of the 1970 cars on the road, and it could still average out to 80% of "all" Porsches built still being on the road.

Update... I have now had the car for 24-hours, and this is not the one for me. I had a conversation with Marc at RedLine here in L.A., and I cancelled the PPI.
On a performance note, the engine sounds and pulls wonderfully. Acceleration is great, and cycling through the gears feels terrific. The top works perfectly. The interior, although in great condition, feels a bit tired, and the side view mirrors are constantly deregulating (and having trouble moving back into place). Yes, minor items, but these, combined with the large 100,000 sitting in the mileage counter, just don't feel right. My gut says "next!"
The hunt continues! Thanks for all of your insights and responses... what a great forum!
