I priced out an independent shop (bodymotion)... They quoted around $18k so when it is all said in done, at this point, I just assume let Porsche install the motor... The reason they have gotten so pricey is that Porsche stopped manufacturing the motors so they have to buy everything part by part. 3 years ago a new factory motor was around $8k.

Sorry to hear that you had to go through this.
Porsche engines are not what they used to be. Years ago you could do so much to an engine--build it stronger, modify it, etc. Now, it sounds like anything you do can easily lead to a premature failure.
Trust me, this sort of behavior by Porsche will start to impact their business. People aren't entirely stupid.

Also, Porsche brand is now getting very diluted with incredible number of models, they're becoming another BMW, with almost as many models. Macan just release, and then next year they're gonna release a new Cayenne Coupe?! What's next? Small econ sports car competing with VW GTI?
Ferrari has taken the opposite approach, limiting the #of Ferrari's built, and using Maserati, Alfa to fill-in the numbers... I have no idea why VW/Porsche doesn't adopt the same model?

We are not the growing market anymore. It's China and I'm guessing that studies show that they want a vast selection of cars.

I guess you're right as China sees Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi as all the same, and Caynne coupe is being created to compete with X6 apparently (a completely useless car IMO).

I'm with you Alex but I see that those days are gone. Ferrari is different because they're a small independent company that had always looked at passenger cars as a means to an end. The end was racing and that's all that mattered. Porsche really blew it when they got too big for their britches and thought they could take over VW. They came close but in failing they left themselves wide open and the Porsche car company of yesteryear is gone.
