Only one side now that I think about it... I'm afraid there's a possibility the head gasket went on that bank,or could be AOS... Scored cylinder? Who knows... I just remember he last mentioned he took it for a drive and it started running really rough...
Point is,I wouldn't drive it anymore, not even start it,he could be causing more damage that way...

Have you ever owned air-cooled 911s? That's fairly typical for those versions when they sit a long time in cold weather (re: seals contract and oil pools).

If it keeps up the AOL separator(s) sound like a possibility.

Hi All,

Car is at dealership for service... they are taking the engine out as we speak ($3200 OUCH!) to do a check... Sounds like you are all correct... either AOS or Scored Piston... Will keep you posted

OMG. They are taking out motor to replace AOS? And charging $3200 for that 'diagnostic' alone?

That is why no one should use dealers for any serious work. Ever.

I thought the same thing but maybe they scoped the cylinders (saw the damage) and already know the engine needs to be rebuilt????

Autowerks in Woodbridge On, charges approx $1800 to replace an AOS, and $380 or so for a compression/ scope test...

TheLooch is getting raped here... unless they already know it's a scored cylinder...

i was scratching my head wondering if/why the engine needed to be dropped based on aos/borroscope.

Both sides definitely, but maybe more from the drivers side as more of it burnt away.

Assuming that we're still looking at a 997.1 car. Driver side smoke is indicative of issues with bank 2 on the engine. Bank 2 is on the passenger side and gets the least cooling as the coolant is routed from bank 1(heats up) then to bank 2. Therefore bank 2 is more likely to suffer from scored cylinder liners. Note that the exhaust from bank 2(passenger side) is routed to the opposite driver side exhaust pipes. Here's a detailed tech write up re this potential issue. http://hartech.org/docs/buyers%20gui...20part%205.pdf Of course, don't panic and have it bore scoped by a qualified p-tech. GL and let us know the outcome.

FWIW, I believe the bore scope should only require removal of the spark plugs to get a scope into the cylinder chamber. Then the engine should be cranked over to view all cylinders completely. So I agree with others that dropping the engine is premature especially if this is an out of warranty expense.

I've been reading this thread and feeling for you Looch - I can't imagine what you must be thinking. I hope it all turns out to be the AOS or something other than "scoring". Good luck to you! All the best!

Several years ago Porsche did a courtesy borescope job on my engine in order to get to the bottom of what I consider excessive oil usage. They never dropped the engine to do this. They go in with a borescope after they pull out the spark plugs and peek inside.

It sounds more like an AOS. That's more common.
