If you want good tires and don't want to spend a ton of money go with the Hankooks. I have used several brands and currently have the Hankook Evo V 12. I am about to replace the rears after about 15 thousand miles. The fronts still look new. Pretty spirited driving and one DE. Really great tires regardless of price in my opinion.

Bridgestone S04 or RE11 here. 95% performance vs MSS but at a lot lower cost and higher wear rating

Tire Rack currently has Bridgestone Potenza S-04 on sale at $824 for all four tires. I have not used these tires but the reviews are good.

Since the early 80s, I have never had a set of Bridgestones that I was satisfied with performance or wear. On last set of RE050's, one tire was defective. I would stick with Michelins for a 911.

Great thread. I'm about to replace the tyres on my 997T and was tossing up between the Hankooks and MSS. MSS are 40% more expensive (NZ$1600 vs NZ$2300). Enjoy a bit of spirited driving and weekend back road excursions but am yet to track.

There's a lot of disagreement about how important it is to use N-spec tires. I personally don't feel the need to use them, many others feel differently.

I damaged a rear tire with my first set of Corsas. Pirelli was having production issues with the N-spec tires and they were back ordered, so I went with Audi R-spec in the same size and style. The car didn't fly off the road, I didn't notice any difference.

agreed completely. if the car is a cruiser, driving street only and within 'normal driving' limits i cant see there being any issues with non N spec.

I have the Hankook Ventus V12's on my C4S Cab. Quiet. Sticky. Pretty good tire . . . . It came w/the Michelin's. I don't feel the Michelin's are any better.

I recently replaced my PS2s. I considered Bridgestones since they seem to be a great value. My long time and very trusted Porsche wheel and tire guys said MPSS hands down. Got the MPSSs and very happy with them. Mine is a DD and no track use.

That's a steal! I am on MPSS, but next will try S04, it's a great value for such a high performing tire. Skip Hankook crap!

The Kooks aren't "crap". That's just hyperbole. But, they're not Michelin's either.

Here's what C&D had to say in a comparo w/the Michelin as the benchmark:

" “Deceptively quick” is a good summation of the Hankook Ventus V12 Evos because they often didn’t feel as strong as they actually were, particularly in the dry. Their fourth-place autocross time wasn’t spectacular, but they did outlap the benchmark Michelin PS2s. Geswein said the Hankooks felt “somewhat soft” and “imprecise,” although they were forgiving, yielding consistent laps with no surprises. Despite that feeling of softness, the V12 Evos somehow managed a second-place skidpad run of 0.93 g and were above average in braking. Hankook just launched a new extreme-performance Ventus R-S3 model, which wasn’t available in time for this test but likely has sharper dry responses.

In the wet, however, the V12s were as sporty and connected as they come, with grip second only to the PS2s’ and the best braking. The Hankooks were extremely consistent, likely because they were so well-behaved, which made them easy to drive quickly. Subjectively, they felt the best around the track, even though their time trailed slightly behind the Dunlops’.

With above-average wet and dry performances, and tying for quietest on the street loop, the V12 Evo is an impressive and well-rounded summer tire. And, at $106, it’s a bargain, too."

Far from "crap"

In fact, Hankook is the official tire of the ITC Series.

Yes, the ridiculously expensive PSS won - by 3 whole points above the new Ventus Rs-3. Read it:
