How Much Oil Does Your Car Go Through?
#32
Last time I measured, it was about 1L for 650(?) miles. Poster above said spec is about 1.5L for 1000km. I thought spec was 1L for 1000km. But, in any case, mine is one of the ones that burns a good amount IMO. I don't care as long as it's within spec. I just recently topped it off and reset the trip meter to check again.

120,000 miles on my daily driver. Good mix between highway and city miles. Eats oil like candy.
1 quart per 750 miles. Runs like a clock. Feed the monster !!

2011 GTS, purchased in August 2013 with about 25,000 miles...used about a half liter of oil in the first 1000 miles, then didn't need any added for the next 2000 miles (oil change at 28k).

If you do a search herein you will see many discussions about oil consumption with the 997. It's all over the charts. For the majority of the cars they essentially use no oil. There is a thing called a 'tolerance stack' in which all components that went into that particular engine were on the loose side of their specifications--and additively, they result in a higher usage of oil.
Personally, I wind up putting a quart of oil in no matter what I do, every thousand miles. In some sense, I'm better off because I'm always adding fresh oil. The side benefit is that I know the oil level system works really well in the car!

Going back to what Macster posted about the build up of water and fuel in the oil over time, it seems that the only way to know just how much oil is actually consumed over a certain distance requires a long trip at the end of the measurement period in order to purge the masking fluids.
Some years ago I believed that my 2007 Audi A8 didn't burn any oil because the dipstick always indicated full. However, I embarked on a two thousand mile trip, and when I measured the oil half way into the journey I was almost down to the add oil point, and it took over a quart to top it off. But on the return trip of equal length there was virtually no drop in the indicated oil level because I started that leg of the trip with oil that was "pure" in that the moisture and fuel had already been burned off.

It's my understanding that fuel dilution, caused by frequent short trips (among other causes), for example, is not reversible. So, if you go on a long trip, you will not be buring off the fuel dilution.
Yes, I agree about the water build-up in the oil. This would get burnt off, and then you'd see a drop in the oil level.

If you are getting enough water in the oil to make a difference to the level, I would assume you would see this at the next oil change when what comes out looks like chocolate milk shake??? I've seen plenty of oil in motors and diffs over the years and it always turns to milkshake.

isnt one bar left mean you are about .8 quarts from being full? if you add a quart after which the reading should be right at the top.
what i personally think is silly is that once the oil is at the minimum bar shouldn't an amber low oil light warning light up on the instrument cluster (like the good old days), or at the very least the onboard computer signal (upon gas fillups) flash like 5 times.
