Arrow How Much Oil Does Your Car Go Through?

Hey everyone,

I have been going through quite a good amount of oil. My mechanic says it's completely normal to go through a quart of oil every couple thousand miles.

This sounds a little crazy to me but he is a Porsche tech. Am I missing something?

About half a quart per thousand miles. The boxer engine burns a little by design because of pooling in the cylinders.

That's normal. Porsche considers 1 litre per 1,000 km to be within spec.

My oil level indicator hasn't dropped once in two years. Started at 20k miles, oil change at 25k, now sitting at 30k with another oil change coming next week before hibernation.

Bought my 997 C4S 7 months and 7000 miles ago.

Haven't touched it and still full.

My 996 Turbo burned a lot of oil.

I think once or twice in 23.5K miles I have had to add 1/2 qt or so.

Mine doesn't but that doesn't mean anything. I used 200ml in 4000 miles.
Some engines use more than others. A quart in 1500 miles is probably typical.
But a quart in 600 miles is still within spec I think.
I have 10000 miles on my car. Never broke it in like the book says.
Ran it flat out from the git go. Never for long periods however.
Full power high revs then let in back down to have a high vacuum and cool down.
It's my method and has worked for me for 50 years of many new cars.

John……I have my car for 3 plus years and have never added oil! Now I know Dan (Edgy) adds oil all the time so I think it's the luck of the draw. I wouldn't worry about it.

On another note heading your way on Saturday for 3 weeks. I hope we can get together to check out your beauty. I'll shoot you an e-mail when I arrive.

All the Best,

Tom

49k on mine, never had to add oil between 5k oil changes. Most it goes down is 1 bar.

I figure that mine uses about a litre/4-5000 km. As already mentioned, it seems that the DFI engine uses more oil than the .1 engines.

No reason to, really, but for the OCD people, it would be about 300 ml's. Add about 150 ml's at a time to see the bar movement.
