Default Your impressions ( driving) the 991...

Hi all,

Just curious what the 997 owners think of the way the 991 drives?

Steering feel, clutch feel, brakes, etc.

Not the way it looks or fit and finish, driving impressions only please.

I have formed my opinions of it. Would love to know what everyone else thinks/feels about it.

Thank you all in advance!

Steve

Lots of past 997 owners over at the 991 Forum. Ask over there too.

Is there some trick to get the 991 Forum to list on the Water Cooled pull down menu? I can get both the 991 and 991 GT3 to show up under Alll forums but not on the Rennlist Forums pull down.

If there were a 12 year old kid around I could ask him how to do it but I have to rely on myself and my expertise is lacking.

Test drove 991s recently. I personally did not notice any difference with steering feel, car felt lighter and faster.

I drive a 997.1 4S with a 6 speed. Recently drove a friends 2013 991 4S with PDK. It is by all measures a better car (well the steering is a bit flat), drives smoother, seems to be faster, and the new PDK is awesome. That said, it isn't as visceral an experience as driving my 997. The PDK is faster / better and I liked it alot but it isn't as engaging. The new car rides smoother, steers smoother, and shifts smoother but each "improvement" takes away a small bit of feedback and the sum of the parts ends up being a wee bit less fun IMO. It is a beautiful car but I think I'll wait a couple of years and pick up a 2014 GT3 which seems to be the perfect marriage of a more compliant chassis, improved steering response and everything else that you'd expect from a GT3. My 2 cents.
Cheers,
Dave

I drove one and liked it a lot (especially the interior). Dynamically it felt very similar to my car and while the journo's say that some of the rear weight bias has been dialed out, I certainly didn't think so. It still felt very much a 911. It was much quieter though - much less road and tire noise.

It's hard to justify the premium that these things currently command over a comparably specced 997, so I'll be keeping mine for a bit. I think I'll wait a couple of years and may be pick one up CPO...

Your question is impossible for me to answer as I can't separate the looks from the drive…it colors everything to me.

991 is better in almost all aspects. Like what most say its quieter more compliant, faster, comfortable....everything a new porsche owner would look for in a sports car. Twke note a new porsche owner. The ones that had a previous life from the older models, specially the air cooled ones will complain...tooo gt. I drove a few 991's on the road and on the track. These are good cars. But im keeping my 997.2 s. The 991's are crazy expensive and i want a sports car not a fast "lexus"

Can't wait to drive one. I figure now that I actually OWN a 997.2 it should be a no questions test drive free pass! Not that I ever had a problem getting the keys, but I do like to take my 15 yo son with me so WE can take the car and relax, sans salesman. And now that I've had mine and got used to the power, handling, etc. I could have a more educated test drive and not be so blown away and goggle-eyed for 15 min and maybe come away with something other than..."OMG I'm driving a 911!!!".

On the crazy expensive note....wow! I just went over to the 991 forum and looked around. Geeezus...some guy paid $170k for a loaded C4S...seriously?? I mean in 2 years that's MAYBE a $100k car if that?? STUNNING car btw! I guess it's no different that the powerboat set we run with, those guys will lose $200k flipping a boat for a slightly faster model and not even bat an eye. I'm just not wired that way. By no means bagging on the guy(s), to the contrary, it's fun to see them run (cars and boats) and great to see people back spending "stupid money" again!

Yes, new price tags on those cars are indeed impressive. As of all the rest - not so sure. More automation, more movable parts, more things to brake. Those with .2 997 cars are in a good spot right now. Those with 997.1 motors are in tighter spot but all in all as i look at possible motor rebuild cost and new 991 price tag, it makes little sense to me to worry. I can afford new motor but dump $140k or so on new car is too mich. Plus old one drives supreme.

At a recent Porsche World Roadshow event I drove new 991 C2, C2S, C4, and a 2012 997.2 turbo, alligator lapping at Mosport.

Compared to my 2011 997.2 C2, the 991 lineup gives up nothing.

Steering feel is slightly lighter, with more power-steering feel, but still sharp and predictable with excellent feedback. I prefer the steering feel of my 997.2 but I don't dislike the steering of the 991. There's increased power throughout the lineup and you can definitely feel it. The cars were predictable and stable, and felt well planted as you got back on the power near the apexes. Brakes are fantastic, with linear response, very powerful and fade-free.

All cars were PDKs, so I can't comment on the manual tranny, clutch take-up or feel.

I have talked to people who say that the 991 cars are no longer true sports cars. Nonsense. If the 997 - with its comfort and every-day practicality is a sports car - so are the 991's. Probably, anybody who dislikes a 991 hasn't driven one.

I think that if you like any of the modern P-cars, you'd love the 991. I loved the driving feel, and the car is even more comfortable and every bit as practical as my 997.2. The only issue is the cost. Is it worth it? I don't worry so much about cost of things; I can buy what I want but I really hate pissing away money. I really care about getting good value, reliability, ease of ownership and practicality. I'm convinced the 991 is as good as or better in terms of reliability, ease of ownership and practicality. But I'm not convinced it represents sufficient value to make me trade in my 997.2 just yet. Maybe in a year or 2.

I think anything newer drivers better. Why wouldn't it, right? Technology improves every year etc... But before you poney-up on a new 991, go rent a mini-van for the weekend and put some miles on it and THEN go back and drive your lowly 997.1 or .2 and BAM, you'll be back in LOVE with it! We have incredible cars.

I like the 991 OK, but don't like the $35,000 depreciation hit I would take on my 2012 GTS with 7,000 miles to get into one, and the $20,000 or so I would lose on the 991 the first year I owned it.

I love my GTS.

I haven't driven one because I dislike the way it looks, at least the rear half of it. I'm sure it's faster than a 997 and I'm sure it handles better too but I'm not spending 130K on a car I don't like to look at so there's no reason for me to drive it.
