Mezger engine wins for me. 997.1 Turbo is one of my all time favorite 911's.

I have to agree, specially given the endless possibilities to tune that engine to very high HP output without changing internals. Small mods can increase HP easily by 20% and hard core you can safely go to 650-700hp, all you need is a deep wallet.

Back to prices, I see 2007 Turbos going for as low as 63k, 993S are in that range, makes for a hard decision!

Sorry to to OP (this will not be about driving impressions) but while the rear lights seem Aston Martin inspired, in this pic...the rear wheel arch really makes me think Vanquish.

That is not necessarily a bad thing, I think the AM's are the prettiest cars on the road.

I think the picture above just shows why the 997 looks so much better than the 991. More balanced look more 911

The 991 is trying to be more of something its not. A 911 is a 911 in its own right and i think the 991 is more of a response to the new times than an evolution of the 911.

Everyone has the right to their opinion. Some like the 997 better...some prefer the 991. Its all good.
Its like woman. Some prefer the model type bodies, some prefer the ones with some "junk in the trunk" Its all good. They both will suck your wallet dry...

this is just a steaming load of crap. Add a few inches and slim down the tailights and all of a sudden the car is "pretending its something its not" and "response to new times not an evolution of a 911".

thats just asinine.

Actually, it's not at all. This is not to say the 991 isn't an amazing vehicle, but it's getting away from being a sports car. And, a 911 is truly a sports car.

My take after researching both, driving both and studying both like crazy is that something intangible is missing from the 991, something sports car like...like the soul of the 911 is missing.

Again, if you desire a car that's quieter, easier to steer, is larger, has an electronic parking brake, keyless go, auto headlamps and a plethora of the newest modern technology then the 991 is for you. I just prefer something simpler.

That is where I have disagree, not the prettier or not, that is in the eye of the beholder, but saying that it looks more 911 it is just no so. Both the 997, and the 991 are very far from that original 912 launched 50 years ago.

The last car that looked like the 912 was the 964 (and even than was very different already), after that everything changed. The 993 is a prime example of a loved car, considered the best looking 911, but the design had already departed from the original, even though it was just beautiful.

With the 996 everything changed again, specially in size, maybe because of the water cooling, have no idea.

One cannot enter into an argument over beauty, I like the 991 more and respect people that like the 997 more, and even people that love the 996. But all three designs are very far from the original, they evolved.

A very strong design feature where the 996 and 997 departed from the 911 was the fat twilight. 911 always had very thin taillights that change with the 996 and 997, before it was just a thin strip, and beginning in the early 80´s it crossed from one side of the body to the other for the first time. So buy putting thin taillights on the 991 is Porsche deviating further from the original 911 or trying to get back to its roots?

I like the look of the 991... as for the drive, have not had the pleasure. Its a Porsche what's not to like..... all cars must evolve.

You must be new.

EVERY SINGLE TIME A NEW 911 IS INTRODUCED OWNERS OF THE PREVIOUS GENERATION CLAIM THEIRS IS THE LAST "REAL" one.

Give me a freaking break. The 997 isn't a sports car, its a GT Car. So is the 996, the 993, the 964, etc.

you prefer something simpler? and you bought a 997? Really? LOL My 993 turbo is about 13 years its senior and its already pretty complicated. Drive a 3.2 carrera or SC and then get back to me Mr. simplicity.

If you prefer the 997 thats fine, but lets keep the nonsense to a minimum about how the 991 is no longer a real 911.

Wow, angry much?

I never said it wasn't a real 911. To the contrary, its beautiful and refined and an amazing vehicle. I will say it again...To me, it is lacking something. Its too refined, too business man like, not at all raw.

And, I am entitled to my opinion without being yelled at, yes? I had a choice and I chose a 2012 997...because it lacked that level of refinement.

You chose what makes you happy.

And to someone else, my 993 is lacking something...its too refined...too businessman like...not at all raw.

And to yet another someone, a 901 is lacking something...its too refined...too businessman like...not at all raw.

So, where is the turning point where its no longer a real sports car?
