Default First time 911 owner reflections

Some things I have learned in a couple months of owning this pretty little car:

1) RTFM - I left my lights on a couple weeks ago. Woke up in the morning, car was stone dead. No big deal I thought, I will pop the hood and jump it with my truck. Oh no new guy, its not that easy -- time to start pulling out fuses and bypassing things to get the trunk open first.

2) Mods - After doing a GIAC flash, intake tube, headers, mufflers, and an x-pipe and spending about 6k I have realized it was all for sound. Next time around I will buy wheels and tires and leave perfection as it is. That said, it sure sounds like a million bucks now.

3) My front lip is LOW. After a couple weeks of painful scraping sounds I have perfected the "tacking" approach. I have also come to the realization there are certain places I can't go in my car, this is life and I now accept it.

I will add more as they come, please feel free to add yours.

1. You can remove the plastic battery cover in the frunk to get to the battery.

2. Lol, I've heard this many times. Porsche engineers already extract every hp it possibly can. Only way to get more hp w/o wasting a lot of money is with a super/turbo charger kit.

3. Yep, you learn to take every curb and speed bump at an angle.

Congrats on a nice looking 911.

1) this
Amazon.com: CTEK Multi US 3300 12-Volt Smart Battery Charger: Automotive Amazon.com: CTEK Multi US 3300 12-Volt Smart Battery Charger: Automotive
with this:
Amazon.com: CTEK 56-263 Comfort Connect Cig Plug: Automotive Amazon.com: CTEK 56-263 Comfort Connect Cig Plug: Automotive

is a 'must have' item.

2) not quite true. mufflers and 'intake mods' - yes, sound only, intake mods usually reduce power if they start sucking in hot air from engine compartment. wider headers, 200cell cats - are track mods to increase air throughput via exhaust, when combined with ECU flash it increases and flattens torque curve to get rid of nasty 'drop' in pulling power from 5.5k to 6.5k area. it is instantly noticeable on a track when car starts to pull from 4k rpm and goes all the way into red line. on a street it is, well, useless and sometimes perceived as a loss of power as you get reduced torque in 2k-3.5k segment due to lack of backpressure in wider headers/cats.

3) yep, they look cool those aero gt3-style fronts but for street they are useless. on my avatar is one possible of workaround - a front lip that sits on a stock bumper, it is 2-3 inches higher than aerokit one but adds a bit of downforce, not much though.

Congrats! Always loved the oem kit. Im also a new owner

As for no.1 the driver of the truck who delivered my GTS across the US had the same experience as your for leaving the interior lights on during the whole week of delivery.

Got the CTEK too plus the cig plug and has brought bck my battery ro life... sadly still tending with the airbag fault light that was triggered by the drain... already on 150+ miles and thw light is still on

Nice car and write up on your experiences thus far. Looks like you're in the lucky part of AB - Hope you kept it high and dry!

Nice looking car for sure.
Haven't had a dead battery/trunk locked situation yet (made sure to keep the trunk popped during storage), but the whole no dipstick thing threw me when I first got her!
Perhaps I'll see you around town one day!

4) Checking the oil. I will only now admit that I popped the hood twice, scanned for a dipstick, shrugged my shoulders and closed the lid. Only recently did I do some research online and found out yet another Porsche oddity.

And thanks for the comments -- I love the car. Its funny, I had a couple sales guys sourcing me cars and when I showed them the one I found they got a little elitist with me, "I didn't take you for an aero-kit type guy" or "You like that hideous wing and lip? You realize that car is just trying to be a GT3 right?". I was a little torn -- I originally just wanted a vanilla 997 C2S -- no wings, no lips but this one had such low mileage and all the options I wanted.

Weight reduction is rather uncontroversial - lighter weight battery, wheels, some of the exhausts are lighter, etc.

Jumping the car is done through the fuse box in the driver side foot well. No need to disassemble the front end to open the frunk

Newbie here. I looked at the fuse box and it wasn't clear how this would be done. Any instructions?

If you're planning on doing any maintenance to your car, even relatively simple stuff, you need:
a) Metric (yea, that one is obvious)
b) Large set of Torx. (that one surprised me).

Just off the top of my head, I've run across the following torx:
--Interior panels
--Coolant drain plug. This one was torx. Someone hammered in hex to get it off.
--Oil drain plug . This one was also probably torx. A hex has been hammered in there so many times it sorta looks wonky hex now. I don't know what was there originally honestly.
--Spark plug/coil shroud covers
--Bolts that hold coil in place
--MAF. These are tamper proof Torx BTW. The ones with the little metal bump in the middle. At some point, you probably will want to clean the MAF and don't want to spend hours driving all over town looking for these stupid things.
--Some of the muffler expansion bellows (or whatever those things in the rear fenderwell are called) were held on by torx.
--Air intake is held together by torx. The air filter is inside.
--Cabin/pollen filter had some torx as well I think.
--At some point, the exhaust manifolds changed to torx. Some cars have hex. Depends on year I think.

I'm sure there are lots more that I haven't found yet. I managed to pick up fairly complete set of torx from Amazon for maybe $40. Good enough to get what I needed done.
