I think the plates would be considered "state documents" and creating a copy in vinyl is technically fraud. If vinyl plates are OK then why wouldn't I just make vinyl plates with the wrong numbers and run a bunch of lights. I believe this is why people are reticent to do the vinyl.

That said, if you have the originals I don't think you'll have any problem if you get pulled over.

They know I'm from the state via my inspection sticker and county personal property tax sticker glued smack dab to the lower center of my windshield.

I tried it without, pulled over 3 times, hassle.
If I drive across the GWB or Tappan Zee missing a Connecticut front plate, will I get a ticket? Or are they just ticketing people without New York Front plates? (CT requires a front plate)

Also, wouldn’t using an EZ pass alleviate the problem since you’re not stopping?

Ahh, we don't have either of those in CT.

Zirrah - lucky you. Personal property tax is miserable.

I went with no front plate on my new 2008 Cayman for about a year but got a ticket while parked at a meter specifically for a no front plates here in San Francisco. I parked it regularly in highly patrolled street parking spots too. What may have helped was that I left the window sticker on the front windshield that the dealer installs that you are supposed to keep until your plates arrive. I like to think the meter maids and police officers see the window sticker and assume I just got the car.

I now have a 2008 G500 that I've had no front plates on since last June. I again left the the front windshield sticker and so far no ticket. Knock on wood.

I am in nor cal. Had no front plate for 9 months. I just kept the new car sticker just in case after hearing a story that some guy had a car without both front and rear plate for 3 years until his lease end. But, I hate to tell everybody that I got a new car.

I live outside Boston and happen to live next door to a state policeman. I don't even try without a plate. But I do take it off when out of state.
I bought one of the Rennline tow hook brackets. I hate the look, but i don't want any excuse for the pugs to pull me over.

Aside from the "where is the spare tire" question, the front plate issue is the next popular 997 forum issue. It's been discussed so much. Take a look in the way-back machine (search) and you will be presented with myriad alternatives.

North Jersey guy.....no front plate on 2 911s since 2006 and one ticket for $50.00. At $7.00 a year I'll take my chances.
