There's just something about the 997...
...that I enjoy over the 991.
Hey guys,
I have been looking at getting a Porsche again. I was planning on getting a 997 but then found some good deals on various pre-owned 991s. After driving both multiple times, there is something about the 997 that just puts a bigger smile on my face. The 991 is bigger, nicer inside, and faster on paper but it's just missing something when I drive it. I am not sure if it's the electric steering, the bigger size, or the lack of low end torque but I just don't get as excited driving it. I even passed on a slightly used 991S Cab with 3k miles for $100k (MSRP $133k!) to find a pre-owned 997S!
I love both cars but driving that 997 always puts a bigger grin on my face. It just feels more like a bat out of hell, ready to take me on some wild ride. It's a thrill and exciting! Plus I love the looks of it. It just looks more like that classic 911 you picture in your mind. I love the look of the 991 too but the 997 looks more "vintage Porsche" to me.
What do yall think? Do others feel this way?
Am I nuts for passing on a 991S Cab for $100k? Over $33k off...
Hoping to own a 997.2 C2S Cab very soon!

A cab would be great, but if you could get a 991S coupe for $33K off, yes.
The 997 is a great style change, esp. as the later iterations were fine tuned. But the 991 is slowly making headway as the mainstream Porsche "911", per se.
It's just a matter of time, PAG sales are increasing and when the timing is right, the 991 GT3, 991 Turbo, and before you know it, the RS and GT2 varieties will
bring even more applause...
I dont quite know where it will leave the 997's since there will be a large supply overall. But they do have many admirers, myself included.
In this tech era, the 997 Nav will need some form of update to keep it current or else we'll see more aftermarket items installed in the
997's to keep up with current technology. I'd almost surely look for one without the OEM unit installed, or with the NAV delete.
And in about another 10+ years, the 997 will truly be vintage.... esp for DIY'ers. .
Judging by the 991 engine cover, it looks like quite a mission for even simple tasks.

As I was closely looking over a new 991 C4S, my sales guy commented "the 991 is a very different drive from the 997". But by the look on his face, it didn't seem like his words were meant as a heart felt endorsement of the 991's superior driving feel. Just the opposite was the way I took it.

The 911 was the last 911! The 964 was the last 911! The 993 was the last 911! You get the picture
The only thing Porsche philes agree on is that their car is the last real one, the new car is "too sanitized" and the 996 sucks and isnt a real Porsche
And the rest of the world thinks Porsche philes are deranged and that the 911 just gets better
I will admit though that cars in general, in pursuit of excellence and perfection, are definitely all moving towards the neutral and that the experience is becoming somewhat synthetic
Whether or not the 991 represents "too homogenous" will have to wait until whatever comes next. You can be sure though that when new 991 buyers move to the next gen the folks who vacuum up the preowneds at the bargain price will agree the 991 was "the last real 911"

In your shoes that would be a hard decision, for a Coupe I would say 997.2, but after I saw a 991 Cab next to a 997 I loved the 991. I was set on getting a 997.2 Cab, but after test drives went with a Coupe. To me the 991 Coupe finally made the 911 look Great with the top up, the 997 to me looks Good with the top up, but not great.
Both look amazing with the top down.

Short answer - yes
why?
1. 997 more classical design - based on 993
2. last with normal steering
3. last with normal handbrake
4. last with visible engine
5. and a few other things..
No doubt that the 991 is more modern..but it reminds me a bit of the 993 996 times..in the end the 996 was more modern and so on..but today nobody wants to have a 996 anymore - and a good 993 is definately worth more.
