I've had my 997 for 4 years now, it awesome everyday. Gets thumbs up everywhere I go. The 911 combined with my Boss 302 has me not desiring any other vehicle at all. I don't even buy car mags anymore the way I used to.
It's like I married 2 Victoria's Secret models. Good to go.

I think the 991 is quite a departure from the 997, although not as much as the 996 from the 993. The thing I love about the 997 is it brought back a lot of what I loved about the 993. I had a 996 and I got tired of the look fairly quickly once the 997 came out. I don't have the same feeling about the 991.
I hope the 991 replacment brings back a lot of what we loved about the 997

For those that have driven both, does anyone else find the 997 just more fun to drive? That's kind of what I was asking. I like both cars but keep wondering if I will regret buying a 991 S, wishing I had that 997 S feeling...even though I love the technology, bigger back seat, and nicer interior of the 991. I am kind of stuck on what to do...

I haven't yet driven the 991 as I'm not in the market and still enjoy the hell out of mine and feel it would be awfully expensive to replicate its features on a new one.
However, I think quieter tire roar would be a nice improvement. Having once had a GTI with their PDK-equivalent DSG and finding it boring in daily driving, I don't know how if I'm ready to go PDK.
The 991 cab's top is a major improvement over the 997, but I too love the shape of the 997 coupe, especially in wide-body form. The 991 C4S' tail doesn't look substantially wider to me over its 2S brother, unlike the 997.
Maybe a 991 cab one day, but not yet. I'll never say never, though.

And for us stick guys there is another nail in the coffin, if you have not heard of it- BMW has filed a patent to replace the physical connection between a manual shifter and a transmission with actuators to keep the shift pattern compact for trannies with 8 gears. What a gimmick !

"There's just something about the 997"... Perhaps the 997 will be viewed as the last of the "mechanically connected" 911's before the age of e-steering, engine shut off, 7 gear AT/MT, etc... similar to how the 993 is last of the air cooled. Wonder it the 991 will be the last of the purely gas powered 911's. That's a sick thought but we're living in strange times. At this point in my life I think the 997 is perfect with enough of the 993 rawness plus the bonus of a luxury appointed cabin. If you have one... drive it often and drive it fast!

Both are great cars and you can't fault people for liking one over the other. Just be happy that you own a 911. I feel fortunate to own what I consider to be a very special car.

OP: You’ve answered your own question. The 997 puts a smile on your face, so clearly that is the car for you. A mint condition 991 will be there for you a lot longer than a similarly well kept 997. In the next several years, a mint, low mileage 997 will become more remote, so the time to do it is now.
I regret, still to this day, not picking up a CPO red 993 two years after the 996 hit the road. I was in a similar situation as you are now: do I really want to drive an outgoing model when a new version is out? Then, when I couldn’t find a well kept 993 no matter I hard I tried, I realized my mistake. And by that time, the 996s were worth about the same as a Honda Civic. Yeah, I exaggerate, but you get my point.
You’re getting a biased view here, on the 997 forum, including my own point of view. You won’t find many 991 fans here. But you may also want to ask the same in the 991 forum, just to balance the point of views.
