Default Cost of an Oil Change

I had my Indy change the oil today in the 997. Prior to the appointment I decided to pick up a filter at Porsche of Warwick (RI) so that the next time around I'd do it myself.

I paid $48.55 for the filter. I'll admit I cringed at the price particularly when I took it from the counter and it only weighed about an ounce. Also thought to myself I'm gonna have to reference the LIST for a better, cheaper source?

The price of the filter coupled with 9 quarts of Mobil 1 (on sale at Pep boys) brings the cost to about $120 doing it myself.

Well the indy charged me $128. I'm thinking my tools may remain in the tool box!

I'd add that this is the third oil change he's done on the car.

A pleasant surprise today!

That filter price is crazy expensive. My dealer charges me $25 for the filter, and I can get 9 quarts of 0W-40 Mobil locally for about $63 (Walmart)... You might want to buy your filters from Pelican or another online dealer...

But $128 is a very good deal. I enjoy looking over the car on the lift while changing oil, so still prefer to do it myself.

It's about $5/qtr for MB-1 at Walmart so $45 for 9 qtrs... $11 for the filter kit from pelican parts. $56+ if you DIY. $128 is a good price for an Indy oil change.

My local Walmart in Salt Lake City charges $6.97 for 0W-40 Mobil 1. Much cheaper than O'Reilly or other auto parts stores, but not $5...

I almost hate to admit what I paid at the local Auto Zone for my first case of Mobil 1. I believe it was around $10/bottle. yikes.

The price may vary but Walmart seems to be the cheapest for MB-1 here in TX.

Very easy... There's a write up on the DIY sticky that should help as well. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...ech-index.html

You can also find other good oils online for reasonable prices. ($35 for 5 quart jug). Brands such as motul and pentosin. These oils are possibly better than m1 and are readily available in 5w-40 for higher operating demands.

I changed recently with m1 from Walmart @ $6.99 a quart. Considered myself very lucky to find the 0w-40w on the shelves.

Thanks "all" for the filter source suggestions. I was at the dealership and the oil change was fresh on my mind so I picked up the filter. Won't be doing that again!

Appears you can keep the cost of oil & filter under $100

My bill for the filter of $48.55 did include the aluminum seal ring ($4.31)

By the way: I had a choice of filters at the Indy shop. I opted for the original equiptment but he felt a Mann filter was superior, which he also carried. Thoughts?

Last comment: Porsche of Warwick had a nice mix of 991s & 997s in the showroom & on the lot. I still contend it takes a discerning eye to tell them apart. (rear badging was the give away)

My local dealer wnated $325 for the oil change. I found a local guy who only works on german cars. He charged me $130 and he used a factory Porsche filter!! He also used Mobil 1. I had him do my 60k service and it was half the price of the local dealer.. I'm very happy with his work..Shop around..

Good Luck

Any opinions on whether to use the OEM filter or are the less expensive options just as good?
