Smile Costco Extended Warranty Coverage?

Costco came out with their own mechanical breakdown coverage that is underwritten by Century in Florida. I was told that Costco did their research in finding a dependable company to sell to their members. Below is a quote I got on my new 997.2 and the coverage would get me another 3 years and 20,000 miles after the factory warranty wears out. I do about 3k miles a year because it is a third car and time is more valuable to me than mileage.

What do you guys think? I was told the deciding mileage factor for premium calculation is 10K. I currently have 700 miles on the baby. So I can theoretically wait and pay the same premium down the road for the same plan terms. The only risk is that the 997 has recognized faults down the road and the premium is raised. I asked the salesperson and they have been covering IMS bearing fixes prior to 2009. She knew the model year cutoff for this Porsche problem. They don't consider them pre-existing conditions.

Is that how they might get out of paying for an IMS bearing failure? Could that be considered "lack of coolant or lubricants?"

I don't even need to read beyond the language above. Those are broad enough strokes - all in their favor - where there's no reason to get involved imo. Just for starters, I'm sure my Tubi exhaust would be used against me for any engine related claim. And if I had some kind of failure of a suspension part, would a 315 rear tire instead of the stock 305 be considered "oversized"? Probably. The way this is written, they could raise hell over after-market exhaust tips since after all, it is an alteration that could have caused the damage to the engine unless you can prove otherwise. No thanks.

The whole idea on one of these warranties is an insurance policy against a massive repair bill, but reading the exclusions it sounds like any major repair could be denied. I'd probably not risk it and use one of the more commonly referenced services listed here on the forum. My 2cents.

Sounds like you got a good deal! I’d say go for it. If you want something to compare it with get a quote online for an extended warranty coverage on your Porsche. You might find something cheaper but make sure you know what is covered and what’s not covered up front.

I just called a few days ago and received a quote for a $250 deductible. For my 2010 C4S cab the price was around 2400 for a 60k program I have debating due to the reason raised above.

Not sure I followed the comment regarding IMS repairs.

Think about what are the items that might require repair or replacement.

(1) IMS

(2) Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors (about $1K at a dealer)

(3) Navigation system

(4) Water pump

I am sure there are many other examples that rennlisters can add to the list.

Check if those items are covered.

I have bought it when I had just below 25k (price break point). It was like $3.4k for extra 6 years/84k mi. I never used them yet. Though, I have checked them once just to test. I had my mechanic called about a strut and it appeared that an adjuster confirmed right away that is no problem covering. I figured for about $560/year I would get a coverage. Also if I sell it the remaining balance (transferable) would be a good easily recoverable adder to my asking price for potential new owner.
You can ask about specific items and get it in writing. Good luck

I've never dealt with an aftermarket warranty claim, but I read the above language as I have bolded it. That is, the damage must be "caused by" the alteration. Mere existence of an alteration is not enough. Given the wording, I would say the burden is on the insurer to prove the damage was "caused by the alteration" rather than the insured proving that it was not.

any clause related to lack of lubrication will make your IMS repair bill not covered by this 'warranty'.
Costco is out.

fidelity platinum is so-so but it has a lot of complaints on BBB about their practices and they are 'creative' where it comes to covering labor. with motor repair labor is where you lose a lot of $

so I do not know, I am looking myself as well on what to choose in $2k-$5k area for 5 years. so far it is not very easy, I wish more people who were covered in such situations for motor repairs would chime in about their particular type of aftermarket coverage.

With respect to vehicle warranties, lack of lubrication generally involves to the owner forgetting to place oil in the car and as a result failure occurs.

Costco covers wear and tear and leaky seals and gaskets and I would argue it is the best aftermarket warranty available. Their coverage is extensive compared with competitors.

Try finding an aftermarket warranty that will put in writing before you purchase that they will cover seals and gaskets; wear and tear; and tpms. You won't find any except for Costco.

When I talked to underwriter, he explained that if I showed a proof of my oil changes that would cover the "lack of lubrication". I am still optimistic. May be because I already bought it. I will engage Costco executives if any of my claims would be denied.
