Gary...

It's a small body color coded plug that fits into the door lock on the driver's side, to hide what some consider an unsightly bare metal lock cylinder:

They also sell plugs for those who want to eliminate the front licence plate:

Thanks all for the warm wishes, comments and advice. I'll try to post a few interior pics this weekend. As far as options go. This is what I decoded from the sticker in the maintenance book (yes I did some lurking before my first post, but who doesn't!):

Manual Tranny
XCZ Sport Shifter
XSC Porsche Crest in Headrests
026 Silver coloured instrument dials & stopwatch (997)
342 Seat heating, left & right
375 Sports seat, backrest shell left
376 Sports seat, backrest shell right
446 Wheel Caps with coloured Porsche crest
615 DVD navigation package for North America
619 Mobile Phone Preparation (Bluetooth)
640 Sports chrono package plus
672 PCM2 Navigation off-road version
680 Bose Surround Sound System
693 Six-disc CD/DVD Autochanger
810 Floor Mats
870 Universal Audio Interface

The only option I consider missing from that list are ventilated seats, but I've heard of poor quality leather from the perforations as well as staining from condensation.

Nice car and color. I had two Meteor Gray 997.1S coupes before my current white GTS. Don't worry about not having the perforated seats. I am pretty sure they were not available on 997 cars.

That's actually not a bad idea. The lock acquires a black residue -- from carbon lubrication I assume -- and the plug would keep that from staining clothes as well as looking better against the door's finish.

Not that I haven't seen plenty of lubricants of every type in my career, but that doesn't mean I have to keep it in sight 24/7.

First, I'll have to see whether my new Carrera has that opening. The one I wanted came with the enter-and-drive feature and might only have a small capacitance switch instead of a keyhole. An emergency keyhole will be somewhere, but it might already be hidden.

They were available on the 997.2 models, starting in 2009. Don't know about the 997.1's.

Congrats on your new baby. I'm still looking for my "perfect 997.2.
Can someone help me: I'm a Rennlist newbie and for the life of me can't find the link or where to click for the photos.
