When you get gas in New Jersey, do you just let the attendant have-at-it, or do you ask him if you can pump your own? When I got my car I noticed a touched-up chip just underneath the filler door. Coincidence? I think not...

It was (and probably still is) illegal to pump your own gas in NJ. I try to use the same stations as much as possible where the attendants actually care and try not to ding up your car or spill gas all over it. Other than that I have a fuelguard to help protect the car from idiots pumping the gas.

I go to gas stations that are very careful filling my car ( basically the same two all of the time as my car is not a daily driver). NJ gas prices are basically among the lowest in the nation. That is, lower than self serve in other parts of the US. To get full service in other parts of the US you generally need to pay even 30 cents more per gallon. Its a good deal and old folks ( anyone for that matter) do not even need to get out of their car to get gas. So, including labor, much cheaper ( we do have lower state taxes on gas)

Just as the others have stated I go to a gas station that knows me.
But when filling up at other stations, There is no law that says you can't get out of your car, open the filler door and hang the cap from the hook. What annoys me the most is that most of the attendants don't do that. They just let it hang over the fender.

Always pump my own and try to always go to my usual stations. Between the stupid, indifferent and envious you are asking for a problem letting gas jockeys pump your gas.

At a minimum if you don't pump the gas you should be out there watching so they know you are watching. If not it's gonna look like you don't care so it gives them no reason to care.

We have the same rules in Oregon. However, I hover around the fuel filler (and the fuel filler) and watch make sure the fuel filler doesn't do any damage.

I basically do the same at any station. I get out of my car, hand the credit card to the attendant and stand by him and the filler, talking about the weather.

When I worked in NJ I thought it was great I didn't have to pump my gas especially when it was 1 degree outside.

So the weird thing is that in 2006, they tried to change the law (with a pilot on the NJ Turnpike). Backlash from NJ drivers caused the governor to back away from the attempt. I guess there is a sense of entitlement to have full service gas in NJ.

I was curious about this pricing in NJ when i traveled down there a lot. What I heard (not sure if its accurate) was that it had to do with liability insurance. Its cheaper to pay an attendant rather than to have insurance in case something went wrong. Thus prices are lower.

Doesn't NJ also require constant police car supervision at road construction sites?
