Default Dad told me NOT TO BUY a PORSCHE!!!

I had a rather strange conversation with my dad a few days back while driving him to the doctors.

A little information here, my dad has been suffering from Pancreatic Cancer for the past three years. So I have been having these discussions with him about what I, me and my brother, need to do after he passes.

The other day he caught me off guard really. Before he said anything he made me Promise him something on a subject before I even knew what that subject was. He made me promise him that I would not buy a brand new Porsche 911 with the money I get after the "Dust Settles".

Truthfully I didn't know where he was coming from with that comment. Again a little more information, my dad was a Truck Driver for the last forty years of his working life. And my mum just a secretary so it's not like growing up we had a ton of money. Me and my brother never wanted for anything.

Frankly, I told my dad how much these cars cost out the door and he responded with an "Exactly"!

He then informed me on a rough-stimation on me and my brothers inheritance. I about crapped my pants when he told me. Here is a man who drove a truck for a living. It seems all he ever did was save money and kept a low-risk portfolio since the 60s. I tell you the things you know about people.

So I promised my dad I would not buy a Porsche, of any type, with my inheritance. Might use it as a 20% Down Payment on a house in Belmont Shore in Long Beach.

That is an interesting story. I'm sure you are not the first to have this conversation. Sounds like your Dad is a real stand up guy.

Don't get a new one then buy used. 15k will get you a decent 3.2 or boxster, early 996. 25k will get you a decent 964 or 996 3.6.
There ain't much room to lose any money on any of these. I think a nice fancy F250 extended cab with leather seats is probably double the price of any thing I mentioned.

My wife's parents were blue collar and very frugal. They never made much in income and barely spent any of what they did make. The rest was squirreled away in bonds and such. It added up nicely. Her mother is still alive and if she thought we would use her hard saved money on a fancy sports car after she died she would go nuts.

my grandfather was the same way, but my parents are a modern product and my father now lives at my expense - i pay for mortgage on condo he lives, his expenses, he just takes it for granted.

my little brats will get nothing from me when it will be my time to hit the bucket for sure, as nothing gets left at all on a plate no matter how much comes in, life sucks it all out, every last penny.

Seems like he was passing on his advice on how to accumulate such a nest egg.. be being wise with your money and not spending it on unnecessary fancy toys. I assume he also meant Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Astin Martin, etc.

Does 'buy' equate to 'pay for part of'?

When my wife passed away, I used part of the life insurance to buy my Porsche. My wife had always talked about how she dreamed about giving me a box with a Porsche key in it for a gift one day and how cool that would be, so it felt appropriate to me to indulge myself in this way as a way to facilitate her wish. Each person's situation is different though.

I am sure he passing down much more then material goods, forcing your kids to learn it, earn it and spend it. Is much better then just giving it to them.

Looks like you're already in a position to buy your own Porsches. Perhaps invest your inheritance in your children's education?

Tell him that the new 991 doesn't have a handbrake, has electronic modified steering, piped in exhaust -like sounds and is difficult to find with a clutch......so it's not quite technically a Porsche...as he knows it.

May be a generational thing. My dad was a career Navy guy with 6 kids and never made any real money but we were well taken care of. On his death bed he said he was real proud of me and my family but not any of my material gains.

My opinion is that the people who are alive should be the ones making the decisions. When the time comes, spend your money on whatever you want.
