Anything current is going to continue losing value no matter what unless only a handful are made and we all know that just doesn't happen.
If you want something that will hold it's value you really need to focus on something older. Someone mentioned the 993 TT or TTS, these would definitely be good choices.
If you're ok with losing the money and want something current I think the GT3 RS and RS 4.0 would be great choices. You can probably pick up a lightly used RS which will already have depreciated a bit.
Personally if I had $175K to spend I would by a Boxster Spyder and invest the rest. Cash is king right now and you can really get ahead if you have it.

Ford GT...they haven't depreciated yet so I don't expect they will start. Everything is going in just one direction...

993 Turbo S for sure. But, I would be somewhat concern driving it around. I would be very careful with it. I think it's a car that will only increase in value!

BMW Z8's are appreciating nicely actually. Low $100k's at present. Obviously at 5k miles per year that may change.

Few year old f430 given the right car will hold value over the next few years relatively speaking...it will go down but less then some other cars out there.
Gt2Rs.... Amazing car, limited production, and if you get into one a year old and bump your budget up a bit can get into one. Jury still out I think if will retain value...

Ok i didnt read the entire thread, but for someone to suggest a f430 or AM given your biggest criteria of ROI is doing you a disservice. For something like this you need a limited # run.
MY 1st choice is the 4.0.

If appreciation is an important consideration, the only "relatively modern" Porsche I'd consider is a 993 Turbo S. Otherwise, for P cars I'd go vintage.

Lambos and Masers, for the most part only their vintage cars seem to appreciate. Countaches have started to come back, particularly early cars but you better have a good service center nearby.

If I was going to spend $175K funds on a pleasure car I would hands down buy another Ford GT. Hands down. Trust me. I don't think $175K will buy you a GT3 RS 4.0 right now anyway.
The GT3 RS 4.0 while awesome has the potential to be eclipsed by the next latest and greatest Porsche. Its the latest greatest Porsche flavor. Their limited numbers do make them attractive though. I'd love to have one but not before a FGT. Sorry. I love Porsches but....
Ferraris are a dime a dozen and values drop like rocks. Same with Lambo, R8s etc...
A little context may help....when I bought my FGT in 2007 it was on the floor at a Lambo/Bentley dealer with only 1300 miles. It was sitting right next to a beautiful F430 with scuderia badges, leather interior with stiching, classic gated stick shift, upgraded wheels and about the same mileage as the FGT. My wife wanted the Ferrari. I wanted the FGT. I asked the sales manager what he would buy. He said the Ferrari was gourgeous and a work of automotive art with great performance. He further said Ferrari was making about 5000 of them a year. He pointed to the FGT and said "what can I say, just look at it and even better they made only 4000 of them and their done". I bought the FGT and haven't regretted it one second. I wouldn't trade it for any F430 on the planet or a F458 either. No way.
Sorry to wax poetic on the FGT. But thats my 2 cents. They are great cars on top of it and are still world class supercars 5-6 years out of production. They are in a class of their own and already an automotive icon with a storied heritage and bloodline.
But its your money, do what makes you happy.
