beginning to think old is better
after 3 GT3's, and RS and a few 997 Cabs I'm beginning to lust for 964's and 993's
NB; I have owned 964's and 993's
Is it wrong? Have I forgotten?
I'd love a 3.6 Turbo or a 993 C2S... even a 993/964 Cab. Just no AWD's from that era since they were too intrusive.

I don't think you're crazy. Everything seems to be heading more in a digital direction... sometimes you long for analog.

I miss my 964 eventhough the targa top rattled and creaked incessantly. The engine was music plus it had a light weight flywheel providing "near psychic throttle response" . I do love my new C2 which really is a better daily driver.

Depreciation or out of warranty repairs, pick your poison. As I consider my first 911 which I'd drive less than 5k mi/yr on the streets, I ask myself what i really want out of a 911. The small car feel of my old cayman, the Porsche brand, a fairly unique color and/or look, some of the more modern safety features. With $55-65k, you can have some fun at sloancars and drive a special car. I'd also like to drive it to my business at times and not feel like a jackass with a new $100k 911.

I agree, there's just a different feel to those older 911s. I however could not use one as daily, so if going with an older 911, ensure you got something fun as ur daily!

And I agree 100% with you on the preferences - I'd love a 3.6 Turbo also; there's something about that classic body shape and the whale tail!

I am curious though, why did you end up selling the Spyder? It seems to strike a good balance between the old and the new IMHO.

I don't know why you make that distinction, why you don't feel that "older" 911's don't make good dailies in your book.

The only reason I replaced my 964, was that my aging back could not get comfortable.
The adaptive sport seats were so comfortable, I bought the demo 997.
I owned my 92C2 for over 9 years and loved it.

You are not wrong! A 911 classic is the real thing. The 911 evolved over time and it has become larger, ness nimble, less fun. And at this juncture, the 991 is an inflection point in that evolution - the WB increase, along with 20" rims, electric steering assist, electric e-brake, GT-like interior, obnoxious sunroof, creased, line breaking rear, to name a few, is a major departure from the original 911 soul. Many, I know, of course disagree.

I had a red and a white 3.6 turbo, not at the same time. Both great and I really wish I had kept the white one.

Comfort, convinience, room, wet handling, noise, maintenance, etc... 997 is just A LOT MORE refined for daily comfortable driving, as well as tracking. '87 would be great for weekend drives and to drive on twisties, and for short trips but I dont think it's as suited for a daily car as 997.
The 993 is comfortable for long trips, has a better HVAC system, modern conveniences like heated seats, power steering, brakes, intermittant wipers, cruise control, etc etc.
They are smaller as we know, but neither car is really meant for hauling tons of stuff.
Wet handling is fine in the 993, especially with AWD.
The 997 is quieter, but its not like a stock 993 is intrusively loud.
Finally, maintenance. Oil changes every 5k miles, and some minor odds and ends here and there. Its hardly oppressive.
If you don't need the space and don't mind the manual tranny (would not buy a 993 tip), then a 993 makes a fine daily driver.
