beginning to think old is better

I don't have a 997, I have a 987 Boxster but I recently took an 86 911 on a road trip. It was a lot of fun, but also sort of annoying. The air didn't work, and at higher speeds felt very unstable. I can say this though, I would do it all over again. There is something about classic cars that gets me every time, and I am only 33.
In short, no I don't think you are crazy at all

Look at Mike's side by side pics--- the 993 looks so much hotter than the "modern" 997. No offense, I also have the 997. But I miss my brother's 993 so much. It was the ultimate Porsche. What other car can looks as modern, fresh, and hotter than its nearly-20-year old sibling? If the 993 were a person, it would be Sophia Loren—still putting 20 year-olds to shame. Forza Sophia, er, I mean 993!

i've been in the market for a 3.2 for over a year. depending on the day sometimes i want a targa and sometimes i want a cab. should be a nice compliment for my 997 as a weekend car.

turbo 993 is a great car too. I love 964/993, they are unique.
still, you know, any car has its own character. some folks just jump from one to another trying to stay 'current', others are loyal to what they got.

There is allure for the older ones, especially if you have had them in the past. Love some of the modern creature comforts - modern manufacturing/engineering - miss the soul.
I dont have a feel for difference in maintenance. Plug the 997 into a computer and replace the part. You need a GOOD 964 mechanic to not run up the tab.
997 is more powerful/faster. Not sure I like the power curve - jumps up at 3000rpm but FALLS some at 5000 or 6000rpm. The 964 is never ending ever increasing power almost to redline.
964 has mechanical well engineered solid feel. 997 is more Mazda like (which can be good in some ways) Steel vs plastic.
Love the 997 as DD love the cab for weekends.

My 993 is a great dd. I don't worry about it as much either. Costs a fraction of the price of 997, already has a few imperfections, and another one won't cause loads of depreciation. And I get more thumbs up w the 993 than the 997 cab.

Comfort, convinience, room, wet handling, noise, maintenance, etc... 997 is just A LOT MORE refined for daily comfortable driving, as well as tracking. '87 would be great for weekend drives and to drive on twisties, and for short trips but I dont think it's as suited for a daily car as 997.

There's nothing wrong with going backwards. Sometimes nostalgia and older technology produce emotions and feelings that modern technology just can't replicate. If that's were your heart is why not go for it?
I am curious though, why did you end up selling the Spyder? It seems to strike a good balance between the old and the new IMHO.

Went to my old P-dealer to buy some 0W-40 for the CTT and we got to talking. They felt bad I had bought two P's from the "other guys" and the GM took me out to the lot and said, literally, "...which one do you like?". I said that the Carrara White GTS Cab looked good. He then said, "...how much do you think is a great deal for you?".
I told him and he did it for that price. I didn't give him an unreal number, just a number that I knew he would not give by a few %.
I told him the Spyder would fly off the lot and he agreed. I stopped in two days later as a couple was looking at it. He introduced us and I told him about the car (they had no kids). He took it home that day...
Happy ending for all.
But I still lust for a well-kept oldie...

This (997) is my first Porsche. I get 993 and 356 envy every time I see or hear one. I would love to have one of each one day. The OP has a lot more history with Porsches and is most probably correct in his thinking. Cheers.

I'd like to get an old aircooled 911 too. Not as a replacement, but to compliment my 997. But whenever I look at one, old looks "old", as in worn out.
In my mind's eye, I want a classic 911, but have it be factory fresh. Those are harder to come by and cost a premium as well.

Not that this has anything to do with a 993 or 964 but in the spirit of older is better, I ditched my Nikon D200 and went back to shooting Tri-X with my old (1985) Olympus OM-4. Digital is great and the pics can be outstanding (I still use it at times) but for me, with film, I simply get a lot more enjoyment from thinking about the composition, lighting, f-stop, shutter speed, etc. (I know you can do all that w/ a digital but w/ film you generally get one chance and can't touch up any errors on the computer.) I don't think that film is better, just like I wouldn't think a 993 or 964 is better than a 997/991, it is just a great deal more enjoyable to me. And with that, sorry for the rambling off-topic comparison.

in my vicinity all labs that used to be able to process _any_ medium format film are either closed or do not offer such services anymore. infrustructure is gone, resistance is futile...

You are not wrong! A 911 classic is the real thing. The 911 evolved over time and it has become larger, ness nimble, less fun. And at this juncture, the 991 is an inflection point in that evolution - the WB increase, along with 20" rims, electric steering assist, electric e-brake, GT-like interior, obnoxious sunroof, creased, line breaking rear, to name a few, is a major departure from the original 911 soul. Many, I know, of course disagree.
