911 reliability on a slippery slope?
I dunno; this is my 3rd 911. An '06 C2S.
Like my other two 911's - I bought my latest about two years old with a few thousand miles on the clock. I skipped the 964 and 996 generations but have driven 911's almost non-stop since the late 80's and kept each one for a number of years.
This latest car has given me significantly more irritation in terms of frequency and duration of visits to the shop for non-maintenance purposes. Check engine lights, dead batteries due to charging faults - "mysterious" problems that require negotiation and research with the factory/PCNA as to the solution and warranty coverage eligibility.
This is a car that gets treated like sports car royalty. It's frequently on highway trips, visits the track once in a while and is driven aggressively but respectfully at all times.
This car is not a commuter or a daily driver now that I live in a downtown condo. My other 911's were suburban-downtown daily commuters and gave me almost zero grief.
Any other long term/repeat 911 owners feeling disappointed about reliability?

No issues with mine and I've had 4 since 1999! I had the engine replaced in my last one at 4,000 miles but they stepped right up and covered that with no problem. These cars are super reliable from my point of view.
One thing to consider is when you buy a used one you never quite know what you get which is why I always buy new.

Could that be the issue? Rarely driven or frequent short drives - that explains battery charging issue.

Battery/charging issues were a cable loom fault and another warrantied issue. Car is given regular, lengthy healthy "exercise" in non-commuter conditions.

Just out of curiosity, what years were your previous 911's?

i have an early build 997.2. just turned 3000 miles on it and it has been treated well. just one interior rattle but i think the HPFP is making noise (went through this crap on my N54 engined BMW 335 & 535). other than that it has been ok.
like any car, hit or miss. had a new W212 body 2010 MB E350 that was a total turd. multiple problems from the day of delivery. other people have had zero problems.

This is my fourth and I find the newer they are, the more reliable they are. I suspect it's the WAY you're using it. Short trips are never good for this car.

You are not the original owner.
Original owners with problem cars tend to get rid of them.
Original owners without problems tend to keep them.
That's one major reason why used is so much cheaper than new. You're getting a nice cut in price for a significant roll of the dice when buying used.
You might have a problem car, one that wasn't treated properly by the original owner, etc.
I haven't seen many reports on the forums here with the sort of list of problems you have posted.

this stuff you guys say to defend these cars amazes me.. SHORT TRIPS? it is a matter of miles, period. A engine in these cars is up to temp and at operating under its normal conditions in under 5 minutes. So if the trip is longer than that, it is a matte of miles, period. these cars are sold under the pretence they are designed from the ground up to be driven. manufacturers spend billions in R@D to sell these cars and now even hundreds of millions more trying t push the fact that a porshe can be driven daily (see the current commercials lately?). the average American travels less than 30 miles on hs or her commute. if your going to sell a car, it better be abel to do this every day within its e=warrenty or your going to lose money. you buy a chevy or a ford and guess what, you get a ile of crap in terms of interior, styling on some, but you know what you do get, a motor that does not blow up under any condition ( chevey had a 1 in like 43,000 vehicle failure rate last year). the sheer number of threads asking the same thing since i have been a 911 owner and on this site leads me to belive (and th fact i have spoke to every porsche dealer in the st louis area and been told the same thing) the fact there is a MAJOR problem with these cars engines..at least the ones from 05-08.
I am on sites for alot of cars, and NONE have this question asked as often, some NEVER!
and sorry for the runons and the no caps.. this was typed on my phone..

No previous p-cars to compare it to but solidly reliable after 65 K miles and 6+ years. Only fault is a battery charging issue secodnary to excessive voltage drop across the alternator cable. So the battery gets swapped out every three years and I use a battery tender during the winter. Far more reliable than a half dozen Benz I have owned including my current one.
