Default Rear Spoiler Malfunction Warning

I was driving my 997 C2 today and the rear spoiler would not activate when I reached the speed it is supposed to. The warning light came on. When I stopped, shut the car off briefly, I was able to raise and lower it using the button on dash. I did this about three times but each time it made a grinding sound. Do I need to lubricate it or is it out of alignment? Anyone else have this happen?

Never had that happen, but when mechanical devices start making unnatural grinding noises that's typically not a good sign. Did something happen to the wing that would have caused misalignment or other damage? Doesn't sound like a lubrication problem; I'd suspect the motor or drive gear. Unless you're familiar with the workings of the wing, I'd get it in for inspection and service.

Supposedly these are "sealed" units but I don't buy it. I suspect it had failed from a lack of good lubrication. I would suggest that you try a good lube on each side and cycle it with the manual override method until you are satisfied that you may have helped. Have a second person operate the button so that you can stand nearby and listen to the sounds. If it sounds really bad abandon that idea and head to the dealer--it may be outside your capabilities--and mine!

Hope it works. "Grinding noises" (squeaking noises maybe )and a malfunction light wouldn't make me guess lubrication right off the top, but maybe so. Good luck.

silicone lubricant spray, and you spray the two struts on either side of the wing (they are black plastic)
