Years ago with all the black trim, rubber, etc. the black guards looked fine. Today's need to be minimalized somehow or they grab your eyes' attention away from everything else.
Here was my 1981 911SC with a set that I cut down from the stock 930 ones because of the smaller flares. It did the job of protecting the gentle flares without being too much in your face.

Here's my C2S all dressed up in track day attire. I used matte clear and matte black contact paper to cover the areas that take the most abuse... I admit I may have over-done it a little, but it was fun, cheap and easy, and comes off after the event with no problems.

The black surround is black contact paper like the rest of it. I found that if a cut the piece in the shape of a horse shoe, rather than try to make it one solid ring, I can get it to mold around the contour of the headlight without stretching or creasing. I made the horseshoe shape just slightly bigger than needed so that I could overlap it at the bottom. I found it really helped a lot to make a temple 1st out of construction paper, or thin poster board.
