Dang, you guys have like no miles on your car. Some of you guys have less than 3k miles/year. I would be surprised if it failed that early.

True lol. It's tough for me because I travel year round for work so I try to drive the heck out of it when I can. E.g. , last year I put only 2,700 miles on it but this year 12k.

You know what would be interesting is to see what oil people were using (brand and weight) when they had IMS or bore scoring issues with their cars. Wonder why there aren’t any threads asking this question instead of just whether or not people had failure.

I don't think you find a correlation between oil used and whether or not there is an issue with bore scoring or IMS. Since Mobil 1 is recommended by Porsche, you will likely only find the vast majority of cars without bore scoring or IMS problems used Mobil 1 and the vast majority of cars with bore scoring or IMS problems used Mobil 1. I am wiling to speculate that you might find more of a correlation between problems and whether the car was originally leased ("who cares how long the car lasts. I only have it for three years so I will drive it like I stole it when new and while cold") or how often the oil was changed.

I too have wondered this. In the research I've been doing lately, moly content seems to play a huge role in the wear mechanism for Alusil and Lokasil bores. Too, the added Moly and elevated ZDDP of some oils will further reduce wear of the bores and other wear surfaces in the engine. Of course, if the original bearing is still in place with it's seal, a better oil isn't going to help much.

Viscosity of oil also plays a huge component when you consider the HTHS viscosity of an oil. M1 0w40 is at the minimum for a 40wt for fuel economy. Running a 5w40 helps. In really hot climates, a 5w50, like Driven FR50, can't hurt. It's formulated the same as DT40, just with slightly higher viscosity.

Charles, what's the difference between FR50 and DT50. From the name alone, I would have thought that DT50 would have the more similar formulation to DT40, just at a higher viscosity?

FR50 is a 5w50 and DT50 is 15w50. Same formulation additive wise as DT40.

No IMS issue in my 08 997.1 with 57k miles. I’ve had it for nearly 2 years; it’s my daily driver and I autocross it once a month.

I am getting some slip on the clutch in higher gears so I’ll check the IMS when I do the clutch replacement next month. Also planning to get an aasco lwfw and change to a sprung clutch.
