several comments:

as I stated earlier, the f/w upgrade does not fix the issue (I did it on a Win 8 laptop so Win XP is not an issue)
The vendor does not list Porsche as a supported marquee, and the device works flawless in my BMW, but has the hickups in my 997, so the problems seem to be related how the WMA and the PCM 3.0 communicate with each other.
I would like to throw in that we all know that the PCM has bluetooth problems. For example: all the (very well known) reboots of the PCM only happen (in my car) if the BT on my iPhoen is on and the PCM tries to establish communication with the iPhone.
There's soemthign fishy with the BT stack on the PCM 3.0

BTW: I got the vendor's attention through his facebook page. So maybe if we all start to contact him through facebook, maybe he sees that there's a new market for his product and will invest some time and create a f/w update with fixes to our problems

Well the signal that comes out of the speakers is analog. The device takes the digital bluetooth stream and sends it to the PCM via the PCM iPod interface. If that uses an analog signal path, then it is analog at that point. If you feel the digital to analog converter in this device is inferior to the one in the PCM/Audio of the car, then yes.

Whether there is a difference in quality that is perceivable to a listener (with the tire and road noise) is highly debatable.

Good point. It could well be the PCM's bluetooth communications to the iPhone are somehow causeing the iPhone or the device to have a hickup, which intereferes with the streaming off of the iPhone (if the hickup happens on the phone), or with the streaming to the device (if the hickup happens on this device).

As I wrote earlier in this thread, I experience flawless audio without hiccups when using my HTC Android device in my 997.2.

Are you using the Iphone 5 or 4? Seems people are experiencing less hiccups with the Iphone 5

Yes you are right, my iPhone 5 works with the adapter but my daughter's iPhone 4 can't keep a steady connection.

got this from amazon: Sabrent WF-RADU. it uses wifi rather than BT. The audio quality is better than any of the BT dongles I tried. BT seems to be compressed while this device uses wifi/airplay and is not compressed.

PRO- sound quality
CON- you connect via wifi, so your iphone thinks its on a real wifi and you cant use email or any apps that need a real data connection.

The con is only an issue when you are in the car at the house or near a normally used wifi access point. So when the car is turned off, that access point goes away, right? Other than your phone having issues accessing in-house WiFi when you want it to switch to car wifi, when in the garage, I don't see that as an issue.

So this solution uses the Aux input and you won't be able to control the phone through PCM.

I do agree airplay is great, I have that used throughout my house.
