The short shifter is great. After driving a car with and one without, I was sold on the short shifter.
I felt like I was rowing a boat with the standard shifter.

I'm a big fan of short-shifters. I have the Porsche SS kit in my 987 and my 997 and love it, despite the increased effort to get into first sometimes in cold weather. There are other kits on the market, with proponents for each of them. But if you like being engaged with your car, and feel having a manual box is part of that, absolutely get a SS kit.

I had the B&M SS installed in my '07 C4 cab. Big improvement. But a much more difficult install than the OEM version. NOT a do-it-yourself job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Could I be clearer?)

I have the OEM kit and agree with the above, with one caveat: If you plan to track your car it is much easier to do a $ shift with a SSK; OEM or not, installed properly or not. The gear gates are so close that any form of lateral Gs can get you in the wrong spot esp. if distracted. So you must be very conscious of your shifting on the track. As an example, I had a friend take my car out for a Traqmate data point (vid here: http://vimeo.com/16221390). He is a very good/experienced driver but note the difficulty he has getting the gearing down when there are lateral Gs involved (ex: T8 at NJMP T'bolt, @~2:41, etc). He would have learned the car eventually. That said, he does drive an '07 GT3 which has OEM shorter gearing throws. The point is that you still need to be careful on the track - longer gearing gates/throws gives more margin for error.

OEM SSK is the best upgrade I did. That and SmartTop.
Word of warning : it does take a bit of time to warm up if you haven't driven the car in a while.
You can drive it, just be aware the force required is higher for the first few minutes.

Definately notchy when cold... double clutching until warm avoids potential issues.

I keep hearing people say "get OEM" - what am I missing? The B&M shifter sold aftermarket is what Porsche uses at the factory. Or are you folks suggesting people should avoid *other* aftermarket shifters like the Schnell? If you buy the OEM kit from the dealer vs. the kit from bumperplugs, you're simply paying more for the same thing.

If Porsche entrusts B&M to make their OEM Sport Shifter, shouldn’t you?* This B&M Precision Sport Shifter is engineered to Porsche’s strict specifications, developed specifically for the mighty 911s, Boxsters, and Cayman! Shorten the throw while removing some of the inherent sloppiness in the cable operated shifter, there really is no substitute!
