They need to unload parts inventory from the 997 to make room for the 998.

Pure marketing strategy, give em (now) 5 lines to choose from but 30+ models, as opposed to 15 lines to chose from, really gets the buyer's foot in the door in the first place with less line choices.

Yes, pure marketing. They need to keep interest in current production - with sales and not have everyone on the fence waiting for the new 991(998).

Correct me if I am wrong but they did the same thing with the 993. The last year of production they came out with a widebody version of the car. The idea was to keep em moving because they know many people are waiting for the new model.

It works for me because I will buy one of these leftovers after new one comes out.

Actually, Type 993 ('95-'98) had widebody versions in the 4S in 1996 and the 2S in 1997 . Both were available through 1998.

They did the same thing with the 996.

My car, the 2004 C4S Cabriolet was introduced in the last year of the 996. 2004.

It's a pretty good package though. The wheels, engine upgrade, wide fenders.

I'm all for it, this just might be my next 911. Boy am I glad I didn't run to replace my '05 with a 997.2 right away. This GTS is the ticket!!!

^why dont you rub it in the face of all of us 997.2 owners....GTS is the ticket indeed, no mods needed for a very ideal trackday car. X51 and sport exhaust is in itself worth the 10 g premium over the S, not to mention that SWEET front fender
