I bet your rain sensor is on.
Nice weather, no rain. Click your wiper stalk one notch down.
If the wiper makes a swipe you were in the off position = OK
If all you get is a click and no action the thing has been on all the while = can't be good.
IOW, you can be driving for weeks in position 1 and not know it.
Why mention it? Who knows what the repair costs might be, why risk 'burn out?'

Might you accidentally click it on, and therefore leave it clicked on, and not know it because it's not raining? Yes.
When car is turned off does everything "reset" so you would have to un-click and then re-click to turn the rain sensor on? Gotta go outside and test this with a spray bottle of water.
I'm thinking these are the correct answers, then again I could be missing something

I have to do this every time it starts raining. Which at times can be very often. My Cayenne is the same. My old BMW was the same. They deactivate and you must move the stalk again for the sensor to work every time you start the car.

It doesn't physically move, it deactivates. The only way for the rain sensor to work again is to move the stalk.

Even if it didn't deactivate, I'm not sure what would "burn out". It's a sensor. If it doesn't sense anything it's not going to send a signal to activate the wiper. Are you worried about the sensor itself? There are dozens of sensors all over the car in constant use...

And isn't it the case that if you start the car with the setting in the 'sensor' position, that its not activated anyway, that you need to reposition the lever down and back up to get the 'sensor mode' reactivated? Thought I read that somewhere in the manual.

on my wife's car, the rain sensor is overly aggressive. It's usually inappropriately fast for the rainfall and ends up scraping a dry windshield. To compound the problem, as the speed of the vehicle increases (i.e. on highway), the speed of the wipers increase... She doesn't have sport chrono, but can the dealer use PIWIS to shut off the rain sensing feature? I called my local dealer and he is not aware of the possibility to shut it off...
