Default I've got a huge crack

Yesterday while adjusting the rear view mirror, I heard a pop, then was horrified to see this.
I must have had an existing road hazard crack or there was a manufacturing defect in the windshield. The crack originated at the rain senor, so I wonder if the glass is different in that area, or maybe there was an air pocket in the glass that was stressed and finally gave way.
Anyway, I won't be enjoying my Porsche until a new windshield arrives special order.

Awful! I nearly spit out my coffee seeing that pic! My advice? Ask around and use the windshield people who do the most expensive cars (Ferrari etc) in your area; pay what it costs. Good luck!

So, you mean those would be better than dealership to do it?

I wouldn't be surprised if the dealership contracted the actual installation out to a windshield specialist. In any event, Todd, hope you get that fixed soon to your satisfaction.

Try your insurance -- windshields are normally covered against road hazards (less the deductible, of course).

Most dealerships contract out windshields to a local glass installation company. I had the windshield in my 997 replaced under warranty last year when a stress crack spontaneously appeared overnight while it was parked in the garage. My crack was a perfectly straight line starting under the molding at the bottom edge. Yours looks more like something hit it.

I was at seminar last week at Bodymotion in Ocean, NJ on paint and windshield repairs for porsches.

The speaker was adamant that many problems with paint blemishes can be caused by improper windshield replacement repair.

Do not skimp corners here. Find out who the dealers use and get it done correctly.

Yes, perhaps.

See, some guys don't know how to remove a plastic trim piece without gouging it, losing tiny stuff, or making small mistakes that they judge as "just fine."

High-end windshield shops have guys who KNOW the customer will go nuts if the 50cent plastic retaining clip (if made by Ferrari it's 50bucks ) is missing or gouged with tool marks.

My point: it is hard to find guys who know on intellectual, aesthetic, emotional and ethical levels what the words "immaculate, "perfect," and "un-messed-with" mean. Those guys should be paid lots, IMO.

Over many years of renting many cars, I have destroyed the windshields of two rentals simply by not being careful when adjusting the rear view mirror. Generally there is a metal piece that is adhered to the glass. This part may have sharp edges and if you apply too much oomph ( technical term) , the edge of the the metal part can crack the windshield.

Don't mention about the mirror - just say you got hit with a road stone chip. Most insurance companies will cover it then but probably not if you tell them you broke it while adjusting the mirror.

I would never bring my 911 to a dealer to have a windscreen replaced but would get the best specialist window place to do it. Make sure they order the right spec / tint windscreen.

That part of the windshield is really touchy. I was putting in new seats in my GT3 and just bumped
the mirror with the new seat and CRACK!
