on the 993 vs 997 sex-o-meter question, beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course... but I find both pretty dang hot.

At some point I will make the leap to a 997-based car... probably a GT3.

Loved my 993. Love my 997 C2S.

I prefer the 993 when I'm standing around looking at it. From the B pillar back it's my favorite car shape on the planet.

But as soon as you roll out of the driveway the 997S is greatly superior. Same weight with 100 more HP. Far superior handling. Better quality feeling and more ergonomic interior (although I actually prefer the look of the older interior). Both cars have been 100% reliable so a wash there.

Ultimately, my 997 is fully 10 sec a lap faster around Laguna Seca, and it has nav, more comfy seats and better HVAC. It's faster than a stock 993TT, especially is there are any corners involved. The only complaint I have is that the GT3 nose scrapes easily.

I think the Lexus comments mostly come from people who haven't driven one or are comparing to an early non-assisted 911. My 997 steering is so tight you'll go across 2 lanes when you sneeze if you're not paying attention. It's a sharper handling and riding car than my modded 993. No, it's not stock but it only takes a few sensible mods and a good alignment to turn it into a scalpel.

Having said all that, I'll probably own another older 911/993 soon. I don't do as many track days as I used to and the older cars are more relaxed and fun for cruising around on weekends.

I have a 96 4S, my wife lets me drive her 09 2S.
Definitely different experiences, but each has its charm.
The 993 is more fun to drive at a mellow pace, (great sounds / feel / fabulous looks).
The 997 needs to be pushed harder to feel as good and them i'm going too fast for "civilian" driving.

ps, 993 do rattle or more accurately, creak, search the 993 board for windshield creak.

10 seconds - amazing!

I have driven the 997 - it was a C4 cab - and at everyday driving speeds, it drives like a Lexus SC. That is not a put down. It is a compliment to Porsche that they could design a car that is 10 sec a lap faster than my 993 and still be so docile around town.

As some have already said, the 993 is great fun to drive even slow. The 997 is a quicker car and a better daily due to the amenities that modern humans desire and have come to expect. The 993 is a marvel for being an air-cooled mostly hand built gem. The 997 is a testament to modern sports car engineering. Both are great sports cars (both look beautiful and the non-enthusiast motoring public sees them both simply as Porsches.)

It's sort of like using a Leica rangefinder versus a modern DSLR with the same optics (if you're a photographer.)

My fantasy garage: 997S; 997GT3; 993C2S, 993 Turbo. Old school, new school. All depending on my mood that day.

lol. umm, no. Been there done that. ISF can't even hit BMW territory. It's harsher than a 997 yet rolls more.

Sure, just google 0-60 times. Or lap times. I recall 997S has around a 15 sec advantage over 993tt at the Nurburgring.
Or better, I can say that I've personally owned and driven both on street and track and it's my experience.

Great thread. IMHO you can't compare the 997 to the 993. They are just two different cars. Both Porsches, both great, but very different. My 993 is a Sunday car. If I was looking for a daily driver, I would look at the 997.

Now you have opened the door for me to post photos of my 993.......

Keith's car is one of the best examples Ive seen of a 993 C4S. From the color to the wide hips in the back. I've tailed this car several times on fun drives, and was drooling the entire time

I love my 993. Have a friend w/a 996 and it is a nice car but feels more like a luxury car.

ISF is as close as a lexus gets to a 997.

Best time i see for a 997.2 S is 7:50. 997.1 was 7:59. Haven't seen any 993TT numbers.

As for acceleration times, it appears that the 993TT got to 60 in less than 4 seconds based on articles in Motortrend, C&D and the like. I believe the 997 is stuck in the low to mid 4s.

Agreed, but that doesn't mean they are even remotely similar. Technically the Hyundai Genesis is as close as a Hyundai gets to an F430 too.

BTW, I must say that the ISF has one of the most nicely finished interiors I've ever seen, just screams quality. The fake, unconnected exhaust tips are an epic fail though.

As I said before, I have owned the cars in question and I'm not at all biased or saying which one is better (subjective), just which one is faster (objective). My ideal garage has a 993 and a longhood along with a modern Carrera.
