Carnewal produces a widget to overcome the problem without messing up your interior and for only 150 Euros ($100?)
My guess is that it is a remotely controlled relay to interpose between the valve activating solenoid in the engine bay and the PSE dash switch relay. Toggling it on/off will have the same effect as removing the Porsche relay cable in the engine bay (which is the standard fix). Therefore it will overcome the 25-50 mph quiet phase of operation as well as giving you more control.
Here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1V9lW1CW-4
Or check the Carnewal website.
Must be better than chopping up your interior. And cheaper!!

The "remote" is, of course, battery powered using a universal battery.

It simply takes the 12V + from the PSE power supply and utilizes a new fixed 12V ground that it is switchable via the remote control. The existing PSE wiring uses a ground switch linked to PCM buttons and other on/off logic. The Carnewal unit replaces that ground with a ground that you can control via the remote.
So no addtional power supply is needed for the Carnewal unit and the only "additional power source" is the battery inside the remote (like the man said).
Nifty thing is, if you have an '07 or newer car - you may be able to program the Homelink buttons to control the Carnewal unit. The frequency range of the remote is outside of the Homelink range for '06 and earlier cars based on my googling around on the subject.

So, if you already have factory PSE, this is an easy plug and play.
If you don't have factory PSE, you still need a 12volt line. Why not just put in the switch and save $200 or
use a generic 12volt remote unit for $20.You may need your own plug!!

Generic remote looks great - imagine on existing PSE could wire in similar to how you wired in your ashtray switch but splicing into the hot PSE line to feed the unit and interrupting the ground with the remote unit. Would only work if dash PSE switch was in quiet position if the dash switch interrupts the power not the ground - do you know which it interrupts?
Also, I picked up the RadioShack switch only to learn the current version can't be made to fit as you mentioned elsewhere - where did you source the newer switch you used in your newer installation? Thanks.

Switch is a Philmore SPDT # 30-16155. (thanks Ken S for looking up my lost number)
I can no longer find the SPST version(30-16150)
Switch was available at you-do-it Electronics, Needham, MA. Any good electronics store (Not Rat shack)
may have it...hard to find now.
My understanding is the DME interrupts ground, not sure about dash switch.
I wonder if you just regrounded solenoid if it would eliminate DME and just work with factory switch?
