Default "Sport" mode throttle mapping observation

I understand what the sport button does (or at least I think I do) regarding throttle mapping- it essentially moves the pedal travel vs. throttle response curve forward.

On my M5 when I maintain the gas pedal in a constant position and press the sport button I feel a surge of gas and resulting acceleration- exactly what I expect. When I do the same on my 997- nothing. It is exactly the same as before I pressed the button. Why?

I can feel a slow down in rate of acceleration when I de-activate Sports Chrono on my car, holding all things equal.

Nice M5 - great car, that e39 M5. During a momentary lapse of reason, I sold mine .

When I hold constant gas-pedal-position and engage Sport I feel acceleration in my 997.1 C4s.

Thanks! So it would seem that it behaves slightly differently from my M5.

It's just software. They can program in any logic they want. Maybe they decided not to have it kick like my E39 M5 did. Instead, the change in mapping is more subtle.

On my Cayenne, if I'm moving, the throttle map change is not instantaneous.

I think you are correct re throttle SC behavior. There are 2 systems at work, the SC throttle map control and the ECU torque control.

As a test. have sport engaged, and select cruise control to govern your speed. once established on cruise, de-select the sport. See what happens. (nothing). The car maintains the speed needed, without 'moving' the pedal. It proves the electronics are governing the function.

I'm not sure that test would go to the point I originally raised. As the cruise control would be an electronically governed throttle based on speed information. Whereas I understood the sport button remapped the gas-pedal travel / throttle curve. If, however, as stevepow pointed out in the owners manual, this does not take effect until the pedal is floored or released- this would explain my observation.

All sport mode does for the throttle is re-map it to a 1:1 ratio. There is no power gain by doing this.

Also, the Sports mode causes you to have a much sharper cutoff of the throttle RPM limiter than the usual one. (Probably a better chance of adding to your numbers in the engine log).

I don't know why these buttons are not persistent. Especially on the e39 M5 as Sport also gives a much better steering feel. I could never understand buying an M5 for non-sport driving. However, my dog would get sick if I drove in Sport - the car reacted too fast for him. He seems perfectly fine with Sport in the 911.

Maybe try making the "Vroom Vroom" sound when you hit the button?....
