I believe most expert drivers will be able to get a 997 to lap faster than a Cayman S. Whether or not one of us dudes who are "experts" only in our own minds could do the same, is another question. FWIW, I found both the Cayman and Boxster to be wonderfully balanced, highly tossable, easy to drive at speed around turns, etc. The 911 is more substantial and less cramped.

No offense. I thought it was funny. I owned a Boxster S at the time.

I loved my 2 Boxsters! I personally think the Cayman is ugly. The Boxster is not a girly car, more men than women drive them and the handling of the mid-engined car is why!

Maybe in South Carolina. Out here in California, where men are men and our Governor married into the frickin' Kennedy Clan (for cryin' out loud!), 9 out of 10 Boxsters are driven by women. Including my wife. Unless I'm driving. The chicks dig the Boxster. I'm thinkin' "the handling of the mid-engined car" is not why.

No sunroof (cynical), smaller engine (cynical), and no back seat (practical). And Porsche = 911 = Porsche. Easy choice.

Said another way, spending $76k over $50k is 52% more money.

Isn't math funny?

I had a loaner Cayman a few weeks ago. It reminded me more of a decent BMW 3Series (maybe from the late 90s??? - whenever BMW 3s were still handling well and weren't so heavy) than it did the 911 - which was surprising - just a completely different feel, but not a bad thing at all.
EXACTLY - when I had my base Cayman, I commented several times to friends how it reminded me of an E36 M3 in it's power and delivery.

As I said before, I had no insecurities with driving a base Cayman. It just wasn't made as well as I would have liked and it depreciated like a rock ($58K sticker went to $33K trade in less than 2 years). I'd buy another one as a track car any day...

IMO it depends on the track layout.

I was really surprised to see the price increase on the Cayman--
it had a window sticker of over $76,000.00.

Window sticker to window sticker, the 997 is certainly worth an average $24k - $30k more.
This topic is getting stale.

But I don't see why carrera owners have to bash the cayman or boxster. Why the insecurity?

I have met several pro drivers (including some at PSDS) and when the subject comes up they all say the cayman is a great track car and the equal if not better than the carrera depending on the track.

I have gone to several DE's this year and seen many caymans put gt3's and 911's to shame.

Its still a porsche and in the right hands a great driving car.

I like the cayman s alot. I think its a fantastic platform and reminds me of the days when the 911 was lighter and much more nimble. I find when I take people out on test drives...most cant drive well enough to extract the potential out of either a 911 or cayman so I think people buy these cars to show off the badge in the driveway...sad

The people buying Caymans are the people who prefer mid-engined handling to rear-engine handling. It's not that hard to imagine if you open your mind a bit.
I'm not insecure. It's just true.

If you feel a Cayman feels cheap next to a 911, go sit in a Ferrari 430 and make yourself sick at how cheesey the 911 is. There is no end guys
I prefer 911 to 430 anyday 430 feels cheaper to me. Especially the door panel. unless you enjoy paying for maitenance out the ear you should feel the same.

Put a better (more powerful) motor in the Cayman OR the Boxster and the 911 would be in BIG trouble. I own a 997 and a 987 and the Boxster would be perfect with a 997 motor.... In fact it would give the Ferrari crowd a real run... it's a great car and does all the right things....just needs some umphhhh!!

cayman handles better than a 911 period.
cayman with LSD will eat any 911 with equal power for lunch.
the only 911 i'll take over cayman is GT3 variant and only b/c the engine and the gear box.
