It makes it easy to drive from a stop on a hill. No rolling back. Idea has been around for a while, often called a "Hill Holder". Did you read your manual?

It takes them a month to transport the car from Germany to the Netherlands? Are they pushing it?

Is this a new 2010 option? Does it work by utilizing the brakes or the trans/clutch?

Standard on the 2009 manual transmission car. It holds the brakes until you release the clutch so the car is easy to get rolling when stopped on a hill. Standard on 2010 as well I would assume.

Also on the PDK car - and it seems a touch aggressive to me. Sometimes I try to go and feel "stuck". On a very sloping driveway, trying to ease forward can really be annoying; there's no "easing" forward - just the awkward stuck feeling that suddenly gives way to forward motion. I don't recall seeing anything in the docs about disabling it, but I wish I could sometimes.

My BMW 550i had something similar - transparent though and much better I thought - well I never thought about it actually, and that's how I liked it.

As others have stated, it helps getting started when the nose is pointed up hill and you have 1st gear selected... by preventing you rolling down hill backwards (not sure if it works if the nose is pointing downhill and you select reverse gear before releasing the brake).

When you let off the brake pedal, the brakes stay engaged for a few seconds, which gives you time to get the left foot engaging the clutch and the right foot applying gas (while the car holds the brake). The brake will disengage at a set # of seconds, OR when the car senses forward push from the engine. The amount of push needed is more substantial than some would like.. it does feel like you are trying to drive away against the parking brake being engaged... and then the brake releases. It takes some practice/repetition to have it start feeling smooth.

I can see on steeper hills, or if you want to creep forward slowly, it can be a bit tricky, but if you are at a stop light or stop sign and need to just drive away, that is, accelerate continuously, its not a problem.

Yep, works in reverse as well. The conditions needed to engage are:

- car on incline
- must be in first or reverse
- clutch must be depressed fully

If it's engaged and you deselect gear it stays on until you release the clutch. If you do that you'll feel the brake pedal release slightly, generally moving up a little as well. It's very very handy in my book. My old 2003 Benz had it as well but being an auto it was not as obvious.

Mine starts talking as I shift from 1st into 2nd gear.

"Just remember I will throw up all over the car if you drive too fast."

"Remember the last time you drove this fast with me in the car I almost divorced you."

"By the way they tell me the cops are using laser on Lake Shore Drive and are targeting 10 or over."

"if you drive like this I'm getting out."

Remember we have to pick up toilet paper before you start your Mario impersonation."

Is this what you mean by a drive-off assistant???
