CPO/build quality
I’m confused. Many people on this forum call the 997 the most reliable car in the world, exquisitely build, etc, etc. Also everybody seems to advice people to always buy a cpo’d car.
Why?? Personally I hate buying extended warranties and/or insurance. I find it a rip off most of the time. Since the build quality is the best in the world why would I pay the premium for the cpo if I have done a PPI? Thanks for your thoughts

While these cars are considerably more reliable than past Porsches (I know this for a fact, since I've been driving them since 74) unfortunately, Porsche, like all auto manufacturers today, continue to add complexity to their cars in the way of features/options which may not have the same level of technical maturity of the gasoline engine, etc. As such, it is that stuff that could go south on you. That stuff is expensive to replace/repair on your own dime down the street.
If you want a completely fool-proof modern day 911 I suggest you buy a stripped Carrera with nary an option and you will have one of the most bullet-proof cars available.

I don't recall anyone on this forum saying the 997 is "the most reliable car in the world". Possibly the most reliable 911... and some devotees of the later air-cooled cars would disagree with that statement.
I do recall people saying if you want a reliable car you should drive a Toyota or Honda.

993 ran from MY95 through MY98. Not a big run. Earliest one is now 14 years old. The 997, a strong derivative of the 996, is currently running from MY05 through MY09. The 996 engine began its run in MY99. Ten years. Not much different than the 14 year old 993 in age. I think my statement earlier is still valid,--the 997 is a more reliable vehicle than the 993.

I am an engineer too and there is plenty of data to compare the 993 to the 997. As stated
the 997 already has a longer run than the 993. With the 10's coming out thats 6 years of 997 data.

I agree these are very reliable cars. HOWEVER, things can go wrong and, in addition to the complicated electronics and systems in the car, you can have engine or transmission issues that can require a NEW engine or transmission (very rare, I believe), and I'd rather pay some cost for a CPO or insurance rather than being the unlucky sucker that had to pay for that on his own!

I think most people recommend the CPO because German cars, especially p-cars, cost a small fortune to fix. If it is a rare, large problem (read IMS) it is a rather large fortune.

Unless you know the previous owner and how they cared for the car... Even though you get a PPI, you can't know for sure just how the car was maintained / driven. CPO goes through 100+ inspection points and things that aren't "right" are replaced. So part of the attraction of CPO is the inspection / replacement (ie: fluids, filters, brake pads, tires, etc.). Then to have 2 more years of coverage for what amounts to $2k is nice insurance.
