2009 Porsche Carrera S Exhaust Soot!
#34
My 2009 Carrera S is a soot factory...it is really unbelieveable how much soot is on the inside and outside exhaust tips and rear bumper of the car after a week of driving. When I start the car up it covers my garage floor and back wall with soot it blows out of the exhaust! My car sooted up even with the stock exhaust but shows more soot now that I removed the 2 side mufflers and only use the rear muffler since the exhaust path is not as restricted. The inside of the stock mufflers is full of soot that I could dump out.
I took my car to my dealer and they kept it for a week and did a full diaognostic check out. They pulled the headers to look into the exhaust valves, did a compression check. Everythng was way in spec but they can not find out why so much soot. I also was burning around a quart of oil every 700-1000 miles. The oil burning has since tampered down to 1/4 of a quart in 700 miles.
I followed my wife in the car and had her floor it getting onto the freeway and a black puff comes out of the exhaust. I say the car is running extremely rich.
So much for the new 2009 Carrera S being a greener car...the exhaust it puts out if filthy. Porsche needs to address this issue with what I would suspect with a leaner cleaner burning ECU fuel map. However I get the feeling that Porsche could careless about this issue.

Some months have passed now, all the same with your car, but no problem whatsoever ?
Dealer told me yesterday about a Problem with a DFI engine of a Cayenne. And that using too much Shell VPower is not recommended, as it has too many aditives
My car also has soot and I inly use Shell VPower... I'll change to Esso Super next time and see if in the next month there is any change

For what its worth my '06 GTI with turbo DFI has very sooty pipes. I can clean everything up and within a few hundred miles the pipes are filthy. Car has 48,500 miles and uses no oil...by this I mean at 5,000 miles on the oil before changing the oil is still at the full mark on the dip stick.
In contrast my daily driver ('02 PT Cruiser)...don't laugh please, at 98,500 miles has an absolutly clean pipe. I've never cleaned the inside and it is like new...no soot or any deposits.
No answers just observations.

I was given a little teaser photo last night of a section of your paint before and after of a little detailing work going on.
I'd be willing to bet there is not a spec of soot or dust on your car anywhere!
Paint looked awesome.

I saw those pics too. The car looks awesome! The detailer is first rate!

I use Shell V Power, Sunoco, Chevron fuel. I see zero difference between these brands. But I will keep a look out and try to pay more attention and try a tank of each brand.

I still get soot but a little less lately. I get ZERO soot when I do a DE as the car lives at 4500-7400rpm. The inside of the tips turn a whitish grey at the track.

Me Too
Crap, my tailpipes are very black and there is soot on the rear bumper after a drive. I also am using lots of oil, about a quart every 1000 miles. Is this my first new Porsche with an engine problem? It is a great car but I am a bit worried about the problems so far. I am especially concerned that some 997.2 owners do not have any oil consumption problems or soot for that matter. I guess time will tell.

Hello 997.2 folks.
Come here when dreaming of my next P-car, just to look around and see what issues may be popping up with the new cars.
The soot thing has me curious and was just reading a article in road and track in the tech questions.
Question was the pros and cons of direct injection. Of course all the benefits are listed, it does say however that with the fuel missing the intake valves there is nothing to wash the valves of any oil that may accumulate on them from the crankcase vent.
One company has increased filtering of the crankcase vent but it got me wondering if the accumulated oil on the intake valves may build up and then when enough gets on there, the burn may get dirty (sooty) for a spell.
Does not seem to effect every car though from what I gather here.
Can't imagine what this may do to the long term life of the cats if thats the case.
Just a thought, I may be blowing smoke (soot) but thought I would share.
Apologies if this has been discussed already this was the first thread that came when I searched for soot.
Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts.
Enjoy your 997.2's hope to join the ranks some day soonish.

Another 996 guy chiming in....buddy of GNR996...
I've heard murmers of head sludging issues...is that what we're talking about?
Sound to me as though a heavy foot would go a long way to sorting the soot issue out by the way. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about....I know we sometimes treat our cars like jewels, but they're not. Run 'em hard.

I too have this problem with my 2009 C2. My 2005 was an unbelievable car, in 40,000 miles it burned a total of 1 quart of oil. The 2009 is another story all together. It now has 14,500 miles and I have added almost 12 quarts of oil. PCNA is absolutly no help at all. After spending hours on the phone with them they go back to the stock "a quart of oil every 700 miles is normal". What a load of @#%$&!!!! I have owned and driver performance cars very hard all of my life and have never seen oil consumpsion like this.
I have also complained about the amount of soot on the exhaust. Again the PCNA answer is "that is normal for a DFI car".
Buying this car was a hugh mistake! I had had it to do over again I would have; 1) kepy my 2005, 2) bought a new V8 BMW M3, or 3) looked at a V8 Astin Martin.
This will definately be my last Porsche. Dealer is great but both PCNA and Porsche Germany couldn't care less about the car after it is sold. Will be selling or trading this car as soon as it makes financial sense and won't be back.
Porsche = EPIC Fail for customer satisfaction!!!!
