If mazda scrapped 100% of its parts, I would expect porsche to do the same. Too much liability in terms of legal and brand to use those parts again.

It will cost them $4 to $5M to guarantee no law suits and no bad press. A no brainer in any executives eyes. Seems really cheap to me.

That's a good point. And, I'm sure that they are insured so if they make a claim they get stripped, chipped and melted.

Even MORE heartbreaking.

I'd like to adopt one before it is put to death.

Here's the link where I took the pictures from: Train Wreck. WARNING: this is German newspaper BILD; page contains minor nudity.

They are now talking about 20 damaged Porsche.

Here are other links covering the same story:

Hessische Rundschau (with short video)

I love how the Bild Zeitung talks about that one lone car sitting on the tracks only having minor scratches.

Agreed: 20 cars x $100K = $2million = chump change.

It's a lot less than that...$2m is retail value. Porsche's cost on those 20 cars is a fraction...I'd bet closer to $500k.

The insurer of the carrier (the rail transporter in this case) is liable and will be expected to pay for all losses.

Porsche is entitled to the full wholesale value of the damaged cars (the price they would get from dealers), which obviously is more than their actual manufacturing cost for each, and less than the retail value of each.

The carrier is at fault here, and the carrier's insurance will cover the losses.
