Has anyone swapped out their plastic door sills with the stainless illuminated ones which are available as factory option? Can it be done, and how much of a pain is it to wire in the lights? Also, do they just pry off?

Ken-
I had Hergesheimer in Lake Forest install my 'plain' stainless. I am sure they can do the fancy illuminated ones. One of the best independent shops in OC.

I was told by Ric at Suncoast, the install is a bit tricky. The biggest challenge is removing seal plug and locating power wire under sill area. Their price is $535.
I am tempted to give it try. You can always punt and take it to the dealer...
Best of luck!

Check with Renntech as they had the document on how to install them.
BTW, I have them (factory install) and love the look. yes they sometimes blink when door opens, kind of like a neon light. Very brief.

Several of the Rennlisters undertook this project about a year or so ago when they first got their cars and decided that it was a look that they wanted. What I recall from those projects was how incredibly hard it was to remove the original stuff (they are installed with doublestick tape). To make for a really good installation of the new ones you must take the old stuff completely off. It's a bit of a massive undertaking (much elbowgrease) but it can be done successfully,--but it will take some time. The electrical hookup isn't supposed to be THAT bad, but it's best to do your homework.
What I would personally do under this project would be to do the de-installation myself (my labor has to be cheaper than a dealer's!) and then let them do the electrical. But, if the electrical isn't THAT complex (after some research) I could probably do that as well.

Not ****,--just watching out. I know exactly whose wife scratched mine! The blue tape is a good idea for certain events.

I put the non illuminated stainless steel sills in last year. The tough part of the job was removing the factory plastic sills. The double sided tape is really stubborn. I pried them off w/ some thick plastic shims (no scratches on the painted surfaces) and then used a 3M product, some Goo Gone and acetone plus a lot of elbow grease to remove the leftover adhesive.
Unless your wearing metal soled shoes you shouldn't get any scratches or scuffs on the SS sills. Mine have been in over a year and they still look brand new.
Bottom line I think they really look quite nice; marked improvement over the basic black plastic.
