Thumbs down FOR THE FIRST TIME

They actually mesed up wit hthe 911 deisgn. I am not sure who is now in charge of the lighting design, but the new 997's tail lights are ugly. It seems they're doing what BMW did a few years back with over design. First with the Cayenne and for the first time, ugly 911 tail lights.

Of course just my opinion.

I agree, those droopy tail lights look terrible on both the Cayenne and the 911.
There was no need to change it, yes add the leds but leave the design alone.

I'm not too fond of the new tail lights either, but are you on crack? For the "first time"?!?! Where were you during the grim, fried-egg headlight 996 era? That was a much more egregious affront to the 911 design.

Egregious affront??? Come again?

Not sure what you're calling the "fried egg" headlight look of the 996. Are you referring to the same headlight design that was shared with the Boxster? If so, how did that resemble a "fried egg"? I don't get it.

More like a runny egg. Either way the 996 headlights are fugly.

Not subjective. Truth.

Sometimes, truth hurts.

New 997, gorgeous.

You mean the same headlight design shared with the Boxster? If so, then the Boxter and 996 had the same look, and it just wasn't peculiar to the 996 this so called egg look.

well... that's your opinion... I wish they would get rid of the round ugly 997 lights and the platypus front lip... no wonder Clarkson has been beating it over the head with "VW BEETLE" lol...

I like the gen I 996 lights... looks slick ... the rounds lights have to go! maybe on the 998 they will figure it out...

I don't even own a 996 or 997 and I know fully well that it has been called a "fried egg" headlight for a long time. Indeed, a Google search of the term does turn up references to the 986 and 996 - - on the first page.

Also, the point made was regarding 911 design. What the design was/is on the Boxster is completely irrelevant to his point.

And, FYI, here is a pic of the "fried egg":

I disagree.

That has no resemblance to a "fried egg". Have you ever seen a fried egg that looks like that? Me neither.

At least this look has what can be interpreted as a "runny egg" look:

The point is not that you don't think it looks like a fried egg.

The point is that it has been referred to that description by many people (in the Porsche community) for a long time.

Those are two completely different headlight designs above.

My point is which one is being referred to as the fried egg look? Or is that to say that anything that is not a round headlight design is a fried egg look? Including the Cayenne design?

The first generation of the Boxster whose visual appearance was heavily inspired by the Porsche Spyder and Speedster as well as the Porsche 550 Spyder. The Boxster was released ahead of the release of its big brother, the 996. Through consultation with Toyota, Porsche greatly decreased the cost of manufacture, and introduced large scale sharing of components between its models. The 986 Boxster had the same bonnet, front wings, and distinctive 'fried-egg' headlight units as the 996.
