"Fried egg headlights" is a colloquial expression - - with very flexible definition and use.
We are not defining axiomatic geometry here, okay??
The term fried egg headlights, as used by everyday Porsche people, refers to both the 986 and 996 models. I posted a pic of a 996 model - - whose headlights are often referred to as "fried egg" in practical use by the Porsche general public, and has been for a long time, and was the point made by that earlier post.
Let's keep it simple and straightforward, okay?
Sheeeesh.

I mean, it's either a 'very flexible definition' or it's a definite definition as spelled out in that wiki reference you quoted, which I think is quite accurate.
I'm just trying to get to the bottom of the definition. Does it refer to the shared look with the Boxster, or does it refer to any headlight design that is not a round look?
I happen to agree with Wiki.

Colloquialisms aside, both style headlights used on the 996 (boxster style and turbo style) are hideous and are far uglier than the 997 Mk2 droopy taillights. I posted the other day to a different thread with a comparison:

I'll take droopy taillights over 996 headlamps any day.

I'm actually hoping that for the next 911 generation they go to a headlamp design similar to the CGT. I don't really care for the round headlamps myself. I'd like to see something more exotic.

Funny, the only reason I bought a 997 vs 996 was because I liked the more traditional look of the round lights vs the fried eggs. BTW, this is not to be in any way offensive to those souls with the fried eggs.

"Fried eggs"? I have owned a 2000 911 Carrera for about 3 years now and this is the first time I have heard that expression. Oh well, I guess it's good to learn something new every day.
As far as the "hideous" comment, don't forget that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While I certainly like the oval/round traditional 911 headlights, I also feel that the 996 style headlights(both of them) are also very attractive.
What's with the 996 bashing? Have some of you been spending too much time over on the 993 section?
I would advise you not to spend too much time over there however, lest you get offended by their derogatory comments about the 997s “wet sump” engine or the blasphemous “water pumper” engine comments.

The fried egg look was the early cheap headlights. Even found on the GT1.

Much different then the newer xenon lights

Given the 997S mkII is 65 hp over a 996, I would hope to hell it will be faster but that still doesn't mean the tail lights are good looking.

I also liked the turbo look on the 996 from 2002 on.
