Default Swapping instrument clusters

Lets say one hypothetically purchased a used 997 ( - not yet, but maybe) and didn't like the factory exclusive red gauges, so he ordered an entire new gauge cluster from Porsche (yes, there's a part # for this). Does anybody know if this would be plug and play? Is the odometer, avg. mpg, etc. info stored in the gauge itself or in the DME? Could a dealer do whatever programming is necessary?

Thanks,
Charlie

Default I have the answers

that was me 4 months back, my 05 997 car came with black gauges and I wanted silver..... Porsche OEM part is 2K, insane! Bought new silver entire cluster porsche OEM part off ebay for 350$, had dealer make the swap, they simply re-programed the new cluster with the actual mileage of the car. I then sold my black gauges on ebay for near 300$. Whom ever got my cluster if they simply do a swap I believe their car will read my old mileage. I believe if you posted here and on some other forums you may find someone who would readily trade you their black cluster for your red as even swap and even do the same with silver as Red is unique and some maybe attracted to this wether they have a red car or red seat belts. I added silver seat belts to semi compliment the silver gauges. Hope this helps buddy....

black gaues can be found fairly easy, silver a little more difficult....again another owner willing to swap I think is also likely... good luck

Thanks a lot for that info. The car's a GT3, the gauges are black except for the tach, which is grey. The markings on the gauges are yellow against the black or grey.

you could simply swap out the gauge faces (i.e. keep the gauges, just change the faces).

Quality aftermarket OEM-quality faces are available from FVD for about ~$1,000. Porsche also sells them for about $1,700. My dealer quoted me about 1.5hrs to change them out.

I will have a set of stock white gauges (U.S. spec MPH) from a 2007 C4S available for sale in a couple of weeks if you're interested.

The FVD faces aren't too pretty looking, and it doesn't seem like they have a display picture of 997 gauges. For $1013 + FVD's $300 installation, I'm $500 away from a factory set and preserved originality if I ever decide to sell. I'd rather do it that way.

please let me know if you're interested in set of OEM white gauge faces from a 2007 C4S. I will be swamping them out in about a week or so and will be putting them up for sale.

No thanks, Jason. The GT3 gauges are very different.

I'm going with metric/european gauges. I'm importing the car into Canada in about a week or so
