I know this has been discussed before but I wanted to get the experts opinion on this.

I just dropped off my car at the dealership this morning for a CEL msg. They indicated that my car is due for its first service (8k miles). What is included in this service besides the oil change, fluid checks, and tire kicking? I normally do my own oil changes and now with my new Rhino ramps it should be a snap. The dealer wants 600 for the service. Is that reasonable or on the high side?

A first service at 8000 miles? You're wasting your time and money taking it in. The CEL should simply be cleared. If you INSIST on changing your oil just do it at home and document it. It will teach you more about your engine when you do it which will give you more confidence when out in the wilds with that thing and something goes wrong.

Thats what I thought. I have the oil and filter sitting in the garage. I think i'm going to do it myself.
I was skeptical too when they told me the car needed service at 8k miles. Oh, its an 06 so maybe they arent just going off mileage.

I'm in the DC area so I assume that's the going rate. I think i've read members spending roughly that or more on service #1.

It's an annual thing, too...not just miles based.

First service is at 2 years OR 20000 miles. If your car is an 06, you're likely ready for the 2 year service.
$600 or so is about what most dealers will charge for the first service.
Edgy01 has a nice post about how to DIY. If you're time starved like I am, just have the dealer do it!

I'd do an oil change and call it a day. Have them clear it out; and $600 is a bit high.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but for my own peace of mind and avoiding issues....I'd pay the $600. We're talking about a $90,000+ car.

thanks fellas.. i'll see what they say about the CEL and go from there. If it's just a matter of resetting and nothing major I will do the oil change myself. Part of me wants them to take care of the service for peace of mind. but it its nothing more then a few filter changes and an oil change then the 600 can be better off spent on golf equipment..

One other thing, I just got an air filter and the serial # says 996. Does the 997 and 996 share filters?

a little work on their car. Go ahead, pay the $600 for looking at the fluids and changing the filter/oil. I need to open up a garage just to do this for Porsche owners in my area.
It was also WC Fields who said " a sucker is born every minute"...or something like that.
BTW Cesko do not take these comments personally...it is really directed at all of those who are afraid of the dealership and are willing to pay alot for a little.
If you do it yourself....take pictures doing the job and keep the receipts for the fluids you bought and the filter. Porsche will have a hard time voiding your warranty if you have documentation.

If you earn more than $300 an hour for a living, and you already know how to change oil on your car, which is pathetically easy to do and certainly nothing to write home about, you arguably are an idiot if you do not pay someone a lousy $600 to do the service. What ever happened to common sense indeed?

What is it with the insults in this forum? Not everybody is in the same place in life. If you enjoy it, fine. But there are valid reasons why some people choose not to change their own oil that have nothing to do with "fear" or "idiocy" or "not being a 'real' man" or anything that you say. Think a little before insulting others who may not be in the same place as you . . .

ANd I would hope that an oil change doesnt take 2 hours..

Back to the question about 996/997 parts. I ordered the head gaskets for the header and they sent me the ones for the 996. The question is, are they both interchangeable? The sales guys said they were but comparing the two they dont look that similar. Also the new one looks to be very thin and flimsy oppose to the older one which seems to be two ply. I'll post pics.
