Default Do all leathers smell alike?

The 05 C2S cab I just sold had full leather interior, and had a smell that was a pleasure to experience every time I got in the car. So when looking for a Targa 4S, I made sure I got one with full leather so I could continue the experience. My just-purchased 9-month old Targa has stone gray full leather, and doesn't smell nearly as nice as my black full leather cab did. The previous owner was a non-smoker. The smell just seems more like a deodorizer smell rather than a rich leather smell. In fact, yesterday, after sitting in the sun for a while with windows closed, it almost smelled like some old food or fruit had been left somewhere. (Hmmm, maybe I should check under the seats and see if there are any lemons there, eh Edgy?). I'm hoping over time that the rich leather smell will return. Could the difference be due to stone gray dye having a different smell than black?

"Old fruit"..."Smell of leather"...I don't know why but all of a sudden I found myself humming the tune to "Y.M.C.A."

Seriously though I think you maybe right. My 996 C4S smelled different from my C2S and I have no idea why, even though both had full black leather interiors. The only difference was the C4S had "supple leather" and not the plain stuff.

I think you guys may have hit it. I forgot to mention that my Targa has ruffled leather seats, which I don't like the looks of as much a regular seats, but never expected it to have a different smell.

And thanks a lot Le Chef! Now I'll likely be finding myself humming YMCA every time I get in the car.

Here is a shot of the Targa4S next to the just sold C2S Cab, next to the C55. I'll provide more Targa photos later.

Ferrari leather smells soooo good. Way better than any german car I've had. Leather in Japanese cars hardly smells at all. Iam told that Japanese don't like the smell of leather. Go figure.

Best,

I just hope that products like Zaino etc. restore the leather smell I want, and not more of the different smell of my ruffled stone gray leather. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense that ruffled would make any difference. Plus, I smelled the top of the door panels on my 05 black and my 07 stone gray, and they smell different too. It must be something in the stone gray dye that smells different than the black dye.

Aircooled leather smells different than watercooled leather. my car has quite abit of alcantara and doesnt have the smell of my 996 GT3 with full leather. I didnt get full leather in the 997 becuase the interior is much better than the 996 with out full leather.

The natural leathers are tanned differently than the rest, resulting in an odor that sticks around a bit longer than the rest. (Those have their colors painted on). In time it will lose the smell as it dries out. Keep up with the leather treatment,--at LEAST twice a year to keep some of that scent.
