Not sure about this anymore. About 6 months ago I was asked by a business associate in South America to find a black 997S coupe w. tip in excellent condition with less than 10,000 miles that he wanted shipped to his home town. He capped the price at $75K but was open to all options variables including interior color. Checked Ebay, Auto Trader and dropped my name in the hat with every P-dealership within a 300 mile radius but never found a car for him. Got one call-back from a dealer who had an -06 C2S tip with 4,500 miles for $79,900 "beacuse the tips command a higher price as you know". My friend offered $76K and they rejected it. Car was gone two days later and I was told they got $78K.

I don't think this was an aberration since several sales guys told me the tip is getting much more popular as a lot of people are using these cars as daily drivers and make their choice with traffic jams rather than track events in mind. They also affirmed what edgy said: 997 cab's with tips are MUCH easier to find than coupes.

The Tip in the 997 isn't the same as the Tip in the 996 - I think there were a number of changes and improvements to both hardware and software.

Enhanced Tiptronic S available as an option

As before, Tiptronic S – this time enhanced to an even higher standard – is available as an alternative to the new six-speed manual gearbox. In its basic function, this five-speed automatic transmission remains unchanged, ETM Electronic Transmission Management comprising a range of gearshift strategies extending from comfortable cruising all the way to an extremely sporting and dynamic style of motoring. In each case, the gearshift points adjust infinitely to the driver's personal style and the profile of the route.

Moving the selector lever from the automatic lane to the left into the manual mode, the driver is able to shift gears himself via Porsche's well-known paddles on the spokes of the steering wheel, the transmission responding quickly and smoothly, without any interruption of drive power, to the driver's commands. A further option is to use the paddles in the automatic mode, for example to shift down spontaneously when overtaking or to use the brake power of the engine when approaching a bend.

Spontaneous and extra-comfortable all in one

Gearshift pressure has been increased in order to adjust Tiptronic S to the higher torque of the new Carrera S power unit. This also means even faster acceleration, Porsche's transmission specialists increasing the stall speed in order to improve the car's potential when setting off and thus making acceleration even more powerful and spontaneous: The converter lock-up clutch is closed right from the start in first gear when setting off under full load, reducing slip in the transmission of power accordingly. A further point is that the transmission now shifts from first to second gear at 7200 rpm instead of 6900 rpm so far – and does this even more quickly and spontaneously. At the same time fine-tuning of oil pressure build-up in the shift process, combined with modified clutch plates, allows the automatic transmission to shift gears more comfortably and smoothly. New light running oil, finally, reduces friction losses in the transmission and extends transmission fluid change intervals from 160,000 km (100,000 miles) to 180,000 km (112,000 miles). To minimise the time required for shifting gears, to enhance gearshift comfort, and to actively prevent the risk of the rear wheels locking, the engine management gives gas when downshifting in the overrun mode, increasing engine speeds accordingly.

Typical examples of such a downshift in the overrun mode are the automatic process of shifting down when applying the brakes or an active downshift by the driver via the paddles on the steering wheel. The increase in engine speed serving to compensate for this effect cuts in before the engine is able to build up any drag force. And as part of PSM Porsche Stability Management, this engine control function also prevents the rear wheels from locking as soon as rear wheel spin exceeds a certain level.

The PSM OFF function of Tiptronic S has also been modified in its details: With the selector lever in manual and the PSM OFF switch activated, the transmission is prevented from shifting up when the engine reaches its speed limit. Accordingly, the driver is now able to drive close to the engine speed limit without transmission management intervening.

As with the manual gearbox, one of the objectives in enhancing Tiptronic S was to maintain the same overall transmission ratio as before. To achieve this effect, a shorter spur gear ratio sets off the increase in wheel size. On the road, this sporting overall transmission concept means that the new 911 coupés fitted with Tiptronic S once again reach their top speed in fifth gear.

To each his own, but I test drove a 997 C2S with TIP and found the experience shocking, to say the least...

The car had no soul, it's about 0.5 Seconds slower to 60 MPH and it feels like this !

In my humble opinion, tiptronic transmissions of Porsche are terrible and dated... The only application very it's faster than MT is the 997TT, but here I guess the VGT is helping

Porsche should develop a DSG transmission as in the Audi TT or GOLF GTi, I test drove both of these cars and while in paper slower than the C2S I test drove, they felt much quicker and connected due to this incredible DSG gearbox !

In my case, I would never buy a Porsche with tiptronic, never !

I look at it this way. With the tip, you can easily extract almost all of the car's potential performance close to 100% of the time. All day long - you will never miss a shift, you will never over-rev, you'll never expose your car to range 4 to 6 ignitions on your DME printouts. For most of us, it's probably a little faster round most tracks too.

Assuming model parity, I've seen far too many awful launches and missed shifts to have come to the conclusion that with a manual you'd have to be a very good driver, which frankly most of us are not, to consistently beat even an average driver, which frankly most of us are, who has a tip.

That said, it does take time to learn to use a tip to its best advantage, just as it takes time to learn to use a manual effectively.

I can't explain the joy of a perfect rev-matching-heel-toe-multiple-downshift from 5-4-3 when exiting a freeway. This can be enjoyed daily at safe legal speed, yet everytime a perfect excecution gives me a smile on my face.

Without disrepect to anyone, we have three 911 in my family - '06 Carrera S (6), '07 Turbo (6) and '08 Carrera S Cab (Tip). The Tip car is my wife's. It is a beautiful car (she custom ordered it with a million options) and "relaxing" car but not exactly one that lights up excitement in driving. While the other two have totally different personalities, they are both driver's cars.

I went with a Tip on an 08C4S for two reasons: 1) It's a daily driver in heavy traffic, and 2) My wife drives the car about 10% of the time (boy do I miss it on those days...). I am very happy with the car as it meets both of those needs, but I do think the 6 would be more fun to drive, especialliy to a purist. I suspect my next Porsche (and there will be another one someday -- these cars are great!!!), will likely be a 6, but it will also probably not be serving the same duties as this one.

I'm a manual-trans guy, but I disagree with the tip-bashing here. I've driven tip 986, 987, and 997 Porsches at autocrosses, on the street, and on the track; I find them very competent automatics. They don't shift at odd times, they shift crisply, and they don't feel considerably slower than their manual-trans counterparts. If someone wants a tip; great, it's an excellent car for what it is. I don't think tip drivers are "missing out" on a big part of the Porsche experience.

That said, the biggest tip issue for me is figuring out what to do with my left foot, as I instinctively reach for the clutch pedal in any car that sits lower than a regular sedan.
