Same width as a CS

Same width except GM used it to create the look of the lower rear portion of a garbage truck.

Always wondered about all the performance comparisons between vettes, porsche's or other high performance cars. Unless your tracking them, using any of these cars beyond maybe 20% of their potential can wind you up in jail , no license, or worse when driving on public roads . So whats the point of all the performance comparisons, i.e. mine goes around the Nurburgring 1% faster than yours, or to 60 in 4.7 vs 4.2 seconds, , so what, buy what make you happy.

I can tell you the Z06 Vettes are way faster than the Porsche C2S cars during track days at Sebring....and they cost $15-25,000 less!

During the ride I pondered this thread and why I chose the Porsche and not the Chevrolet.

It is the level of engineering and refinement in EVERY area that love about my 911. I don't drive it thinking "if this interior wasn't so junky this would be a great car". The fact is I drive on the street nearly 100% of the time and for my driving pleasure and $$$ outlay there is nothing I'd rather have than the 911. If I were filthy rich and had a stable full of cars I envision there would be a couple more Porsches in there but doubt you'd find anything Chevy.

Have you even looked at the new Z? I could make the same argument for the it. By the way, I'm not a Chevy fan, I'm a Corvette fan.

That's a low blow. lol. True that is a serious shortcoming of the Vette. I'm not trying to make the argument that everyone should be driving a Vette, just that they are not behind the leaders, they are right up there with them.

I wouldn’t even say that corvettes are really all that much faster.

2007 Chevy Corvette Z06
Road and Track Jan 2007
505 Hp
0-60 MPH 3.6 Sec
0-100 MPH 8.5 Sec
1/4 Mile, sec @ MPH 12.0 @ 121.0

2007 Chevy Corvette Coupe Z-51
Road and Track Sept 2007
436 Hp
0-60 MPH 4.5 Sec
0-100 MPH 9.9 Sec
1/4 Mile, sec @ MPH 12.8 @ 113.5

2005 911 Carrera
Car and driver test results:

325 Hp
0-60 MPH 4.3
0-100 MPH 10.5
¼ Mile, sec @ MPH 12.8 @ 109

2007 997 carerra 4s
Road and Track Aug 2006

0-60 MPH 4.1 Sec
0-100 MPH 10.5 Sec
1/4 Mile, sec @ MPH 12.6 @ 110.2

2007 997 Carerra s streight stock
Dragtimes.com

0-60 MPH 4.1 Sec
0-100 MPH 10.2 Sec
1/4 Mile, sec @ MPH 12.61 @ 112.210

2007 Carrera S with X-51 Power Package
Dragtimes.com

0-60 MPH: 3.9
0-100 MPH: 9.6
1/4 Mile ET: 12.310

Please note that professional drivers completed all of the above times. As you can see all of the above cars are within .8 sec of each other (the Carrera S with the X-51 package is just .1 sec slower than Z06) and the 911 isn’t even optimized for the ¼ mile. And as everyone knows when you throw some curves into the mix the 911 only dominates.

Also note that the Z51 corvette has the same Hp as the 2008 base vette which is just as fast the C2. Point is that for a street/track car Porsche is the way to go which is why I traded in my 2004 C5 Corvette Coupe for a C2. My C5 corvette was a decinite enough car however it’s removable roof leaked whenever it rained, it shook and rattled and it didn’t handle nearly as nice as my 997 and trust me it wasn’t as nearly as fast as my C2.

I, also, had the privilege of driving my buddies 2006 Z06 for two moths while he was deployed to Iraq and although it is very fast and fun to drive it just doesn’t drive like my C2. The point is that it doesn’t matter what kind of corvette you drive you still know you are in a Corvette and it’s just not like driving a Porsche.

The Z06 is close to the price of a C2, and agreed the Z06 is much faster on the track, The original point was about driving on public roads, the track comparisons are irrelevent (to me anyway) . if I was a track guy then it may mean something. Not sure what percentage of people track their cars, but do not think its higher than the guys that do not. These comparisons are always interesting, but not sure they mean much to a lot of people since your in jail or worse if you use any of these cars to much of their potential. If one tries driving like "The Stig" probably wont have a drivers license for very long. I can go back to my 1970 911S I had, and on public roads, I could easily wind up losing my license with that car (as I almost did).

Default We all know the Z06 and now the 08 plain vette is faster etc...But

Owning a new 997S vs a new vette is about so much more than just performance data...at least for me.

Call me superficial, but with cars -- like women -- it's at least partly about the way they look. As long as I can remember, I have loved the way the 911 looks. And, yes, that's worth $20K or whatever extra to me. I do not think a Corvette is remotely as beautiful a car. I don't even particularly like the way it looks. The current Corvette is a long way from a ~'67 Stingray in the looks dept.

As for performance data, you have to look at the same test driver on a same or similar track. Comparisons between magazines are useless, bc they use different methodologies, drivers, etc. Car & Driver did a comparo a couple of years ago. It found relatively similar acceleration performance data, but the 997 prevailed on nearly all other performance -- braking, etc. -- and other characteristics. They concluded -- but by a very narrow margin -- that the 997 couldn't overcome the cost differential. I'd agree that there's no doubt the Corvette has great bang for the buck. But, that wasn't my overriding concern in buying a sports car.

I guess my point was that even the new 08 base corvette is just as fast as the C2, and the C2S is just a bit slower than the Z06 but like 997, esq said when I bought my C2 I wasn’t really overly concerned that the Z06 was faster I really liked my C2 and would only traded it in for a C2S or a GT3……….

I agree with your point. These performance differences are not significant to me, either. I don't look at 'vettes with envy for sure. GT3 is a different matter
