how are the Pirellis?? My car should be here on Monday and the photos show the car has the Pirellis on the car vs. the PS2's that I wanted. I would imagine Porsche chose this tire as well for the car to perform just as good, but I really liked the PS2's. I should have done what RonCT did and asked the dealer to switch out the tires but it was to late...

You won't know unless you ask. See if your salesman can find another car in stock wih the wheel/tire combination that you want and ask them to swap them out. I would imagine that your dealer would be more inclined to swap the entire wheel/tire combination with another car in stock rather than to actually swap tires only.

I have the PS2's and no complaints. Cannot really compare them to the Pirelli's so cannot really advise constructively. I would be happy to stay with the PS2's.

Dave,
If my car arrived with Pirellis and my dealer didn't have another car to swap with that had PS2s, I would be driving on the Pzeros right now. I wouldn't spend the time or money to swap them out.
Normally I probably use 50% (I'm making these numbers up) of what the tire has to offer on the street and 100% of what it has on the track (cold / wet). If we say that the PS2 is baseline 100 points and the Pzero is 95 points and we are only using 50% of capacity on the street - then what's the difference? Me, I wanted the extra 5 points for the times it's too cold / wet to use my PSCs on the track. And that's assuming you believe the PS2 is superior (there are those that do not).

Mine came with the Pirellis, so I have no experience with PS2s. But I'm very impressed with the performance of the sticky Pirellis. They seem to be a very soft compound so they may not last as long as others, but if PS2s are better than these then they must be truely anmazing!

I have Pirellis on my 997 and Michelins on our 987. I don't track either car, but I do drive them "enthusiastically."
Honestly, I do not notice a huge difference beyond the inherent differences between the two cars themselves...if that makes sense.

I had Conti's on my last car, and have the Pzero's on the current one. They are very nice tires, and I would not go to a lot of trouble to change them out. If the dealer will do a swap for PS2's, I might do it just because of my general preference for Michelin tires, but I would not worry about it much. The Pirellis are very nice tires, and while it's not something I think about much, I do like the way they look on the car better than any of the others.

Dave - I don't have a 997 and don't have 19" wheels. However, I have had both Pirelli P-Zeros and PS2's on my '04 996 C2 with 18" wheels. I really liked the grip of the P-Zeros. However, the rear tires wore out very rapidly. I went through 2 sets of rear tires in 14 months (8,600 miles on 1st set and 9,300 on the 2nd set of rears) and at about 50% tread life they begin to get very loud.
I have only had the PS2's on my car for 800 miles so it is too early to tell about the tread life, but the grip is very similar to the grip of the P-Zero tires. I think the ride of the PS2 tires is smoother and quieter than the P-Zero at this early stage in the life of the tire. Obviously, I can't comment on the PS2 tread wear yet. FYI.

i can't comment on the differences in the same car, but i had the P-zero's on my cl55 and they wore very quickly in the rears, they were 285-20's and i only managed to get about 9k miles on them. I have the Ps2's on a C4s now and i put on abut 13k miles on them in the past 9months and they still look new!!! that was enough for me to be convinced that it a superior tire.

I have Pirellis. I agree with Ron's comments. On the street probably no real big deal. On the track maybe some difference between brands but at my driving level probably not going to add up to significantly lower lap times.
Not to hijack the thread but I called Tirerack to check on availability of rear replacement Pirellis (295/30). They told me that they will not be stocking them and to contact my dealer for a replacment set. Is there any place else that would have them at a reasonable price?
