Hard Top Owners!
Just finished installing a new motorized EZ Top for the hard top. Prior to that I was using a block and tackle arrangement that just lacked the control you need to do that sort of stuff by yourself.
It makes short work of putting on an removing a hard top now!

The gearing for the motor is reduced to the point that you have very good control of the top the entire time. It is truly a one-man job now.
Check it out!
(Learned about it from the 996 guys,--we share the hard tops with the 996 models).

Thanks! I might be interested in a hardtop down the 'road'. I drive my Cab during the winter when it's clear & dry but I worry a bit about salt getting into the fabric so maybe a hardtop would be a good investment because I plan on keeping this car for a long time.
May I ask how much a hardtop is and how much that lift is?

A hardtop ordered with the car is about $3000. Obtained later (perhaps from a used surplus 996 model) could run you only $1500 if you could find a color match,--but retrofitting your 997 to take it can run $1800. The lift was around $900 (electric) with a cover.

If the hardtop was not an option on your car you have to spend a few bucks on parts to make one work. Not sure what that entails but I have heard numbers as high as $1800 for the car alone,--even before you get the hardtop.

I've written about this topic a number of times. A dealer who quotes $1,800 to retro-fit the car is ripping you off. I was able to get a 996 top for $600 and another $600 for the retro-fitting of the hardware. One just has to shop around. The more time that passes the more realistic dealers should be about getting rid of 996 hardtops that are just sitting around their showrooms. It took me about a year, but ultimately I found a fair deal.

SPEED--keep in mind that this posting was from several years ago. Why it was reopened is beyond me, but we have learned a lot since then on this topic.
